I've got another paid gig for the same promoter in a few weeks, and I've also been booked by one of the biggest independent promoters on the UK circuit for a spot in a few months - apparently he usually books you on a gong show if he's never seen you before, but he booked me for a middle spot on the strength of my video alone so I must be doing something right. Might be decent at this after all. Interesting timing, I had my first ever gig last night, in Leeds. Went pretty well for a first go I think. Quote

Paid Members BomberPat Posted July 27 Paid Members Posted July 27 I've had a decent run of stand-up shows lately; a mate had a comp ticket for Comedy Bang Bang last week. I'd never listened the podcast, so other than improv comedy I didn't know what to expect. The format was Scott Aukerman as host, interviewing characters played by Paul F. Tompkins and Andy Daly. It was absolutely brilliant; while there were some in-jokes and references that flew over my head, as you'd expect from going to see a live recording of a podcast that's been going 15+ years and you've never listened to, it was mostly just absolutely genius comedy. Looks like there are dates this week in Bristol, Glasgow, and Dublin, and I'd really recommend it if you could get to any of those. Last night was a WIP show for Henry Paker. I've seen Henry live plenty of times with Three Bean Salad, but this was the first solo show I've seen from him. I'm always fascinated by work-in-progress shows, and particularly where I'm going to see the finished product as well, as I will be here. The show is a combination of stand-up and illustration, with a camera over Henry's sketchpad streaming to the screen behind him, so he does some drawings of people in the front row while he does crowd work, and then for the remainder of the show does live drawing with the gimmick that he's teaching you the secrets of illustration. It's a fun format, and a great show - it was all a bit shambolic, and it's difficult to tell how much of that is by design, how much was this being the first WIP show, and how much is just Henry Paker being a very chaotic person. I'm fascinated to see how well it scales up to a much larger venue come the actual tour. Coming up, I've got James Acaster coming up at the Southbank next week, which I'm really looking forward to, and then Ed Gamble at the Roundhouse the week after, supported by Amy Gledhill, Jamali Maddix, and Sam Nicoresti, and it will be my first time seeing all of them bar Ed. I've not listened to it in years, but I went to a live show nearly 10 years ago with with Aukerman and Tompkins and loved it. Kicking myself a bit for not going to this tour because I adore Andy Daly too. Went to see Sam Campbell in South Norwood last night, and despite the fact that he'd brought the wrong powerpoint presentation which clearly threw him off, he was great fun and got some good business out of his foolishness. The sort of show that I wouldn't normally watch or like but it's fucking brilliant. Completely unhinged but never tryhard. I will watch everything he does from now on. Quote

He runs Stamptown (essentially a variety show hosted by Jack Tucker) which has been a staple of our Edinburgh Fringe line-ups for coming on 10 years ago now (we actually just saw it again last night). The Jack Tucker special really doesn't do the live experience justice. It's been remarkable (but throughly well deserved) seeing them grow from smaller venues with a bit of a cult following, to regularly selling out some of the largest venues at the festival. I believe a Stamptown special is due to be released on Netflix this week, so definitely keep an eye out for that. He does the odd show under his own name (Zack Zucher) which are tremendous as well. An insanely talented guy. Quote
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted August 24 Awards Moderator Posted August 24 We saw Jack Tucker at Edinburgh a few years ago, and it was one of the most unhinged, mesmerising, hilarious shows I’ve ever seen. The energy he brings to the room with him is unlike nothing else - you have to experience it if you ever get the chance. Never been brave enough to do Stamptown (for a start, it’s on so late at night) but will always recommend Jack/Zach. Quote
wordsfromlee Posted August 28 Posted August 28 I'm another big fan of Zach Zucker. That special is great. If you enjoy him, I'd highly recommend Reuben Solo too. It's a similar kind of style but a lot less chaotic. I think he does stuff with Stamptown too. Quote
