This year someone I worked with came up to me and asked if I had heard of a band called 30 Seconds to Mars as they had started listening to their stuff as it was this actors band. 

Never felt so old.

Which reminds of the time me and a bunch of mates went to see 30 Seconds to Mars in Cardiff (we would go to see almost anyone just for a night out together) and almost all of us fucked off to the pub less than halfway through the show. 

I spent most of that time shouting abuse at Leto. Pretty sure I re-watched Fight Club, the following evening.

My youngest is 13 and has been showing an interest in playing instruments for a couple of years and has started getting good on the guitar recently. I've given him some of my old gear that I don't use anymore including a flying V, a really good valve amp and a bunch of pedals. More importantly I've also given him the bag of band shirts that don't fit me anymore. So he's been spending his evenings wearing a Ride The Lightning shirt from 1994, playing a badass guitar and learning stuff from Master Of Puppets, Justice, bit of Deftones and some System Of A Down. He'll occasionally mention some obscure track and look at me like I'm an idiot when I'm surprised he's heard of it. Tiktok and the ease of finding music through Spotify seems to be helping to create metalheads. When he finds my massive collection of CDs his head is going to explode/ Within his friend group there's another guitar player and a drummer and they've bullied another mate in to buying a bass so they can start a band. I'm over the moon.

One of the "rules" I've given him with the bag of shirts is that if he's wearing the shirt he needs to at least listen to some of the bands music. Not even gatekeeping, more that there's Obituary, Black Flag, Abigail Williams, The Haunted, Hatebreed and Stampin' Ground shirts in amongst the load I've given him and I want someone to take to see the bands my wife refuses to see.

My kids are in a band together. Well, my eldest has been singer in a band for a while, and then their drummer left so my youngest is now the drummer, which is lovely as they're all 3 years older than her. But she is absolutely fantastic. She showed me her cover of Everlong the other day and she can do it pretty perfectly, even the fills, which for 12 isn't bad going.

She still plays the guitar, but she mastered the acoustic and then really struggled with the electric as it didn't sound great straight away (it's not going to is it?) and was disheartened, but she's got back into it recently. My eldest is a superb guitar player though, really adept and creative and will happily sit on the guitar all day long.

They have a school concert coming up soon where I think they're playing Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish and Fluorescent Adolescent by the Monkeys. Which is hilarious considering what some of the lyrics are about.

They get it from their Mum who has always drummed. Obviously MC Baconbits used to cold rock the M-I-C back in the day but when I suggested spitting a hot 16 with them, they weirdly refused.

That's genuinely made me smile on a proper miserable, rainy morning.

A tangent but I do honestly feel like I'm the luckiest man alive with my kids- eldest likes 70's rock bands, horror movies and musicals, middle son is a petrolhead who loves going to gigs and youngest is the guitar playing, D&D/Warhammer enjoyerer. I've got three kids each with bits of my personality that love stuff I do and they all still, sometimes reluctantly, want to share them with their old dad. It really is brilliant.

Every few years I get the "there's no metal scene/ not enough kids getting in to bands as there's fewer grass roots venues" feeling and posts like these make you realise that not everything has gone tits up just yet. There will always be kids discovering Smells Like Teen Spirit and figuring out that drop D, palm muting and pinch harmonics are the coolest fucking thing in the world.

Ahead of their appearances on the System Of A Down shows in July, Acid Bath have announced a show in Manchester at the end of June.£60 a pop,  but I’d still expect tickets to go fast for this one

@cobra_gordo, you didn’t get the call to be on this one?

No lie, I've emailed a few people to try and get us on it. I think we had more of a shot when it was at the Ritz with it being an O2 venue and having played an O2 Academy before. Even resorted to messaging Sammy Duet before as he was cool as fuck with us when we played with Goatwhore and Eyehategod

Yeah same. My kids are into so much, and so much music its amazing. Both myself and their Mum have pretty eclectic tastes (as I'm sure most people here do) and they like all the stuff we do, and their own tastes as well. My youngest has got really into rap recently and things like Kanye West, Travis Scott, 21 Savage, Dave, Kano etc but then the other week asked me if I liked MF DOOM and I nearly wept with joy.

And they're all so keen to learn. One of the joys for me when I was younger was discovering new bands and artists, and I feel as you get older you tend to lose that side of things (not exclusively but familiarity becomes a huge thing as you get older) but these kids will give most stuff a go, and I love that. 

Anyway, this looks like a lovely day out.

It's so lovely to read about how your kids are discovering music. My eldest (autistic, only partially verbal) is obsessed with music, he has a little guitar that he likes to try and play and has such an ear for a tune considering he is 4 years old. I'm really hoping it continues to be a passion as he grows up. His taste in music always gets a smile from the adults in his life. When I was completing his settling in paperwork for school they asked about what would calm him down if he had a meltdown and music is always the one. He loves Queen and is obsessed with Freddie Mercury, he has been singing Bohemian Rhapsody - lyric perfect - since he was 3, he also loves Guns n Roses and does a mean Sweet Child of Mine - certainly better than Axl Rose can manage nower days! I can't wait to see where he goes with it as he continues to explore with age 

Interestingly (to me) singing belongs to a completely different part of the brain than speaking so whilst he is minimally verbal in communication (though improving) he can sing and remember the full lyrics to a huge number of songs and regularly bursts out in solo performances of Queen songs in the playground at school. Luckily, his classmates seem to love it, hopefully that will continue.

Probably a bit far away for most people, but Seattle is somewhere I've wanted to visit for a while so just bought a ticket for this. Just hoping the US border guards don't ask me the name of the music festival I'm going to, since things might get a bit awkward...

If you enjoy Grunge music, you will love Seattle. The Museum of Popular Culture literally has (or had) two whole floors dedicated to it, one whole floor is pretty much just Kurt Cobain and they have some wonderful stuff on exhibition, his family have given them access to a massive archive. I haven't been for a few years now but it was one of my favourite things on my trip so I highly recommend a visit.

Metal release of the year 10/10. Legit the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life yet it works so well, and actualy funny unlike every metal band that tries comedy.
