What's your small idea?

Martin Lewis winds me up irrationally, but his Small Ideas initiative is really good. Send them something small and annoying that is feasible to fix and they'll campaign to get it done.

In their words "Small, do-able, non-political - the stuff that'd actually make life better." eg. consistent council forms, standardised allergy labels on menus, fairer car parking charges.

What Small Idea™️ would you like fixed?

(I'm aware this sounds like astroturfing, I just thought it would make a good idea for a thread. I'm sure it will involve toilets before long).

One app for car-parking. Well, one app for most things but, definitely one for car-parking. I don't need 4 different apps, 2 of which you uninstall only to come across a car park that uses it after 3 years and now you've forgotten your login, it's got your old number plate and a bank card that expired in 2024.

RingGo, Tap2Pay, Pay2Park, Get2Fuck, they're all annoying as shit. Just use one!

Use of a urinal next to mine when there's another free results in a small fine. Jail time if it's repeated behaviour.

A killswitch on hire bikes in London where if they go through red lights they just stop and the bastards fall off.

On any e-bike, really. Those things are motorised/powered vehicles, and they can and have severely hurt people when their riders don't deign to stop at reds or zebras.

Off topic but as an avid e-bike user I'd really like the language cleared up on these things. The difference between "I get a bit of help when I pedal up to 15 mph" is different from "I turn the throttle and just go".

It's slow-going but this is sort-of in the works.

Aligning yourself with the ideals of the Chinese Communist Party and Elon Musk is a bold take Tigger. Both of the aforementioned entities want 1 app for everything, though car parking isn't usually high on their agenda.

I don't think the point was the Musk style "everything app", just a single app for a single task, rather than having to figure out which of the six different car park apps you're meant to use.

I'd say the same should go for event ticketing - I've been trying to cut down the number of apps on my phone, but keep having to reinstall Ticketmaster, or Eventbrite, or the O2 app, or the *other* O2 app, or Dice, or...etc etc

The same cylindrical screw-top shape for ALL liquids and drinks, in half-, one-, two-, and four-pint sizes. All bottle labels should be one piece of wraparound paper with a single sticky. No more plastic bottles going to landfill or needlessly smashed up by the bin men. Bring back weekly bottle collections and have Unilever pay to make more or buy them back cheap. Proper recycling, not just shipping trash to the Nords so we can claim we're closer to carbon neutral.

There's a similar idea brewing for cardboard packets and boxes, but nowhere near fully formed yet.

Traffic lights that turn into zebra crossings off peak.

Turning left on red when clear.

A one of two hour window in supermarkets in which only one person from a family can shop. I am fed up of going to supermarkets and other people treating it like an outing with both parents, auntie and Uncle and their six kids congregating near the chiller I need to be in, all whilst the mother spends around 5 minutes to decide to buy Cumberland or Lincolnshire sausages
