The Premier League didn’t count as a major trophy to me last season.

Or presumably any season.

Celtic and Rangers both having the weekend off so they can definitely qualify for Europe is peak Scotland. But at least it gave me more time to watch some of the opening English games and feel for poor wee Andy Robertson

You and anybody else can class it in anyway you want, the League Cup isn't a major trophy to me.

As I already said, we are in 5 competitions, 5 trophies come with them if you win and I want all 5. Not every trophy is a major trophy. I don't have to class it as a major trophy, just because we win it.

It's a made up cup that we qualify for being us, we had to win the league title to be in the Community Shield game.

Hard not to feel a bit hard done by, getting pegged back to a penalty that was literally the last kick of the game, especially one won by that particular player.

Quite optimistic about Newcastle's season after that though. Wissa and Elanga look miles better than last season already. I don't shit my pants every time the keeper has the ball and the new signings look pretty comfortable, Dedic especially, impressed me with how good he looked.

Liverpool conceding a goal on the counter after 4 minutes. Is Slot still manager?

What's wrong with Munoz?

Pretty much agreed to sign for Newcastle then went back on it once Liverpool came in.

2-2 before rhe match, would've snapped your hand off but feel like on the balance of play we deserved to win that. Was sat behind the opposite goal but did look like a clear pen tbf, just so frustrating.

Plenty of optimism mind, fantastic tribute to King Kev before the game and was lovely to see Isak have a stinker.

Newcastle fans are gonna be exhausted this season booing half the league :)

Was a great game, and Wissa in particular was fantastic, by far the best I've seen him since Brentford.

Pretty crappy behaviour from Ollie Watkins today, going awol and refusing to play.
It’s been an interesting tactic from Villa the last few weeks, selling half the starting 11 and not buying any replacements. I’m sure that will work-out great…

Saw the highlights of the United game. Spending £70 million on yet another midfielder and one who was crap last season when they can't defend and made Oli McBurnie look competent while creating absolutely nothing of note. Never change, lads.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, Eddie Howe will be United manager by January.

A lot of work for Iraola to do. Has to find Kloppo’s special inhaler prescriptions to get that midfield moving again and find a way for Wirtz and Isak to be half the players we thought we were signing. I’ll take a draw at Newcastle but you felt like if the early goal had gone the other way that team could easily capitulate with the lack of experience in midfield.

A lot of teams will be kicking themselves that they didn’t wave their dicks at Sangare this season. Loads of Twitter nobheads were bugging him up and he looks every bit the player they were talking of. For Curtis Jones plus £10m he could have shown the rest of the Liverpool midfield how to run again.

United were TERRIBLE.

Saw a stat that they made 34 crosses which is the most in 8 years (very David Moyes esque). Maybe would have been useful if they had a proper centre forward on the pitch. I rate Mbuemo and Cunha but I dont think either are at their best playing centrally. Speaking of, what does it say about how shit Joshua Zirkzee is if a clearly not ready Sesko got minutes ahead of him. He hasnt' played since the Liverpool game, wasn't in the world cup, had no pre-season...

Tielemens apparently said in an interview that they did no hard running at all in pre-season and its been very chilled. It showed as there was a lethargy to the team. It came off like they were not close to ready for the season to be starting.

Bruno is a worry as he had a bad world cup, a bad pre season and a bad first game. Have a feeling he drops off in a big way.

Has anybody heard from Rick or should we give him a few days to recover?

Thanks for the concern, buddy. Don't worry, I haven't pulled myself to death. Was a fantastic day though. Completely unexpected, especially when the teamsheet came out and it featured so many of our promoted squad. You can't help but think it's fucking Man United and you've got a team of great lads but with so little top level pedigree.

They were awesome though.

I'll take this bait, you bastard! McBurnie is brilliant. He single-handedly raised the standards and expectations of the entire club and then has carried that on his back. We had a squad of good pros, many known to him from Sheff Utd, last summer but no-one you fancied to score goals. We basically bet our entire summer on getting him on a free. We would have been a bottom 5 team without him, I'm absolutely certain and it was a gamble that paid off. He's an incredible influence, on and off the pitch. He's a real shithouse, he wants to ref the game, he backs in and wins fouls, he gives a bit back, he defends set pieces and he's been brilliant around the box. He just gets on the end of stuff, like he did to force a good and a great save from Lammens.

I thought John Egan was outstanding too. The other two starting CB's scored the goals and got the headlines but Egan was everywhere, was the only person in the back 5 to play 90 mins and is another real leader.

I don't think it changes much for us, other than being 3 bonus points. We still have crippling injuries constantly and need 4-5 more good players. It was a great day though, especially for lads like Slater and Coyle who have come back from League One with us, the likes of Ajayi and Crooks who probably thought they'd never play in the PL again and Giles and Belloumi, who were outstanding in the Championship and deserve this shot. I thought our new Greek Goalie was brilliant. He looks way too good for us. Mendy and Herrington were  superb on debut too.

United were awful, that's obvious but the thing that struck me was literally the first time Tzolakis had the ball at his feet, Bruno had United drop and let us have the ball. That baffled me. They were playing a newly promoted team with a keeper who had never played a PL game and they were sitting off and letting City play out. That just set alarm bells ringing about their mentality. They should have pressed the fuck out of us, forced errors, got a big crowd on edge and backed themselves to win anything that went long.

The midfield weren't as good as Crooks and Slater either. Slater's a real busy player so it's no surprise he'd be all over them like a rash but Crooks shouldn't be in their league. I had to look up who Tielemans was on Flashscores because I was struggling with you the other little slow midfielder was!

I think there's too much quality in Cunha, Mbuemo, Fernandes, Rashford and Amad for them not to be as effective as they were last season but it wasn't a promising effort for a team who are in the Champions League and should be challenging at least for 2nd in the PL.
