Struggling to think of a single element in football that’s been introduced since the backpass rule that hasn’t made it more out of reach and/or more shit in general.

Being able to stand in the box for goal kicks is better. I know the "Pep killed football" mob would disagree but it benefits right through the game, from 11 year old goalkeepers who can't kick very far to the highest level where they want to play across their own box. Goal line technology has generally been a huge success too. I can't think of anything else. Almost every attempt to clarify offsides and handballs makes things worse. VAR just doesn't have enough upside for the disruption, the appalling lack of communication and the fact most of it is still subjective anyway. Making every competition bigger and making more competitions no-one asked for is a killer too.

The phrase "football is a simple game, complicated by idiots" has never been more true and it's not in the way it was initially intentioned.

I never had a problem with goal line technology as it seemed it would follow the same tried and tested formula of other sports, in that it could tell you if object A was either side of object B. It’s a very simple binary outcome, it either is or it isn’t.

In tennis, it’s been trusted for years to tell you if a ball touched a line of not, and technology in cricket will tell you if a ball made contact with a bat or not. But to try and use video and technology to track and decide if an offside had occurred when you’ve got 22 moving objects as well as a moving ball and no lines was never going to work, so why bother?

Football is a game about scoring goals, and technology should end at telling us whether or not a goal was scored when everyone else is unsure.

That's absolutely lovely. As if they weren't my second Premier League team already this season!

I saw an old penalty shoot out on YouTube the other day from when they did the stupid ABBA experiment on Pens. Pointless idea and completely forgot about it.

It’s not pointless, is it? The point is the current method statistically favours the team going first, so doing the other method is supposed to make it fairer.

That's what the coin toss is for. Can't say fairer than that!

If anyone thinks I dislike Arsenal (and I do), you should have heard how loud I laughed when I saw they beat Leeds 5-0. Fuck offffffff Leeds forever.
