It's "Good Enough" Syndrome. 

When I was working for a wrestling company, we had a fantastic artist doing all our promo material, website, programmes, posters, videos, merch, the lot. It was all really good and, just as importantly, all really stylistically consistent - we were a tiny promotion, but I regularly had people telling us we had the best visual style and identity going. But every now and then you'd have a wrestler or someone come up to us and request or suggest an idea for merch or a poster design or video, and it would be light-years away from what we did, and they just couldn't understand why that was an issue. Worst of all, there was one guy who constantly pitched really awful designs, or got his mate to do a really shit, badly lit photoshoot for his character, and he couldn't understand why we wouldn't use it. One time, he pitched a range of badges to sell at merch, and our art guy explained that it wasn't worth the effort, that to produce them at the quality we wanted, the profit margin wouldn't be worthwhile, and he just offered to buy a badge-making machine - literally the kind of flimsy plastic thing you'd have had as a kid - and do it himself, and he couldn't understand "but they would look shit" as a reason not to do that. To him, the worst outcome of a bit of merch looking bad was that you wouldn't sell that merch, not that the poor quality would reflect badly on everything else we did.

We've all seen posters for events that have clearly never seen a graphic designer, long before AI was a thing - clashing colours, six different fonts, badly cut photos, missing half the information that would actually be useful. Always the result of somebody thinking it's not worth paying a designer to do something, because they figure they can do it themselves, or have a mate who's mate's nephew "knows Photoshop", and they'll settle for that because it's "good enough". It's a bit shitty managementspeak, but "good enough is never good enough" is a pretty reliable motto to have when it comes to anything creatively.

And that's why I'm not really concerned about AI taking jobs in the arts or anything like that; by and large, AI artwork isn't replacing actual, quality artistic work. It's replacing slop of a different kind. It's producing shit decorative artwork on sale in TK Maxx and garden centres. It's replacing "good enough" posters for shit indie wrestling shows or pub quizzes.

I'm more worried about the people in management positions who are using it to cut administrative and customer service jobs, because they don't understand what their staff do, and think they can save money by replacing them with ChatBots, because they assume all admin staff do is sit around waiting for an enquiry to answer, and that said enquiry will be simple enough that an AI Assistant can answer it. That will cost more jobs, and make the day-to-day experience of navigating the world, a lot worse. Though, selfishly, that concern might just be because it's a lot closer to home for me.

I still keep seeing the same local old punk promoter posting AI generated posters, most even come with a spelling mistake or two which could easily be down to the generation as much as him fucking it up himself, it's gross but gets next to no backlash. Yet I'm here with zero artistic background and I'm still able to make everything by myself and take the time to make them look good because I give a shit about the gigs I put on, looking at his it feels like he doesn't actually care about his own shows. Luckily he's the only DIY guy I see doing this here, everyone else seems to be a good egg at least.

Unpopular opinion, but ChatGPT is excellent as a supplementary tool for when I'm listening to history podcasts. I've gone down many a rabbit hole after something interesting was said, and I've gone on ChatGPT to give me more info, and then it offers ot give you even more related info and all you have to do is say 'yes'. 

The last one I did using AI was why Italian teams wear blue when it's not in their flag, which lead to loads of other interesting things being said. 

 

In my work I can now screen shot an excel page, and it will pull the information through and list and sort them, and add pre defined sentences based on what has been pulled through. For that, it's outstanding and saves a huge amount of time.

Sure but at least use someone that isn't in bed with Palantir, DeepSeek is probably the best alternative right now and even has US AI companies shitting it as it's overtaking. It might be worth comparing them both at least, they each excel in different ways with DeepSeek being better for coders and programmers.

Edit: that probably sounded more accusatory than it should, it's just good not to let the biggest evil own a monopoly.

Playing a board game the other idea and we had a query about the rules which were ambiguous/not clearly explained in the rulebook. Somebody pulled out Chat GPT and got an answer which made no sense, referred to a bunch of game pieces which didn't exist, and was very obviously making it up based on having no information other than the title and the fact it was a board game. She genuinely couldn't understand why it seemed wrong, kept asking it questions, and seemed utterly baffled when we kept (increasingly frustratedly) explaining that it was literally just making it up to sound plausible, like she couldn't understand why "someone" would do that.

I just uploaded a video. I thought I'd show you what the AI thumbnails look like, because despite the (absolutely understandable) refusal to click on these the quality is increasing massively - to the point where you likely won't know.

That is recognisably "me" but there is something a bit off about it. However the vast majority of audience will not know the difference. That food shot didn't exist. It's complete fiction, but looks the part. What it has done is ape my usual thumbnail style.

Then sometimes it goes way off the rails with these odd uncanny valley hyper-contrasty things. That person is definitely not me - a bit Chris Penn, a bit "SAS man tells you to be tough", a bit Ricky Gervais. Hard paper round, that one. Not for me, but the composition is very good.

For my own use: I will generate some ideas, but then recreate it with my own imagery. Often it's nailed an interesting concept and is able to explain why it's made certain decisions. And through testing their suggestions outperform my own ideas.
