Members SuperBacon Posted August 30, 2025 Members Posted August 30, 2025 My favourite thing of a Saturday used to be buying The Guardian and over a period of several days would read it all (food, money, travel, the actual paper, Weekend, sport in that order) mostly on the loo. Used to do the same with The Observer when they had the Sport monthly magazine. I don't anymore as I think the editorial bias has shifted to where I don't like it or agree with their stance on most things (employing transphobes like Sean Ingle for one) which is fine, I don't need to agree with anything they say or think, freedom of press innit? Also the price. The Saturday Guardian is 4 quid! For that price or slightly more I can get a magazine (remember we have a great Magazine thread ?) on a subject I really like. Do miss flicking through a paper though. Quote
Merzbow Posted August 30, 2025 Posted August 30, 2025 Morning Star sadly allows an anti-trans direction from far too many writers, it used to be my paper too. Quote
Paid Members Lion_of_the_Midlands Posted August 30, 2025 Paid Members Posted August 30, 2025 I've given up on daily print media, because you are reading yesterday's news and the news cycle changes so quickly sometimes the news of 2 hours ago is old hat, let alone 24. I do still read Private Eye. Their more in depth look at stories over time allows for something other than a click bait headline. Their coverage of the ongoing Lucy Letby situation is phenomenal for example. Quote

Shit. I hadn't read it recently. To be honest, I don't tend to read much in the way of newspapers these days. If I wanted to pay money to have someone stress me out and depress me about the state of the world, I'd just get started early on my taxes. Quote
Merzbow Posted August 30, 2025 Posted August 30, 2025 There's sadly a fair amount of Marxists who are pricks about trans people, apparently transgenderism is bourgeois... among the usual lies spread. Quote
Rossman Posted August 30, 2025 Posted August 30, 2025 Guardian was my paper of choice, but gave up with them when they gave Morrissey's covers album, 1/5 in the album reviews. The week before he had been on Jimmy Fallon wearing a badge for Britain First or For Britain. Some dodgy far right party. They spent the "review" calling him a far right racist and laying into him. Bead in mind, they weren't given a forward copy to review the album. They went out and got one, to then rip it apart. If they had a problem with Morrissey's political views, do it in the politics section. Hundreds of albums are released every week. They could have given a smaller artist, column inches and exposure with a review. Their sister paper the Observer also did a review. Also gave it 1/5 and were so brazen, the reviewer said the album was pretty good, but they didn't like Morrissey and thought he was a racist so gave it 1/5. That was online, but been pulled now. Lots of stuff has been pulled from the Observer site. Quote

Paid Members FLips Posted September 10, 2025 Paid Members Posted September 10, 2025 Right wing shitbag Charlie Kirk has been shot at a campus event. I saw a video on Reddit of the shooting and it’s very unlikely he’ll live as it goes right through his neck. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c206zm81z4gt My fingers remain very firmly uncrossed. CTXRussomark Posted September 10, 2025 Posted September 10, 2025 Good. Already seeing a bunch of "no matter what his politics are, he's still a human being" type comments on social media. Fuck that! He's a cunt and I have zero sympathy for cunts. Quote

There was also this tweet from him. If only he campaigned the other way. Oh dear. Quote

I don't care about Charlie Kirk. I do think it will almost certainly lead to a worsening of the situation over there. For that reason I'm going to stick to a beige, old fashioned "Somebody getting shot is bad" line for now. Quote
