Reading that they haven't banned members, they've advised against it because there could be some dodgy people speaking at these rallies, anti-Semitic groups will try and use this war to try and stir Jewish hatred. Being pictured with or associating with these people is not a good look. I can also understand why they wouldn't want any Labour party flags from its members.

What I imagine they want to avoid is Labour MPs or local politicians standing next to signs saying "From the river to the sea".  It's taken a huge and often controversial effort to close the Labour Party antisemitism topic and it's exactly the sort of opening the Tories are desperate for.

Reasons why people have lost their party whip in the current Parliament (largely but by no means entirely Tories) in chronological order:

  • Antisemitism
  • Assault
  • Harassment
  • COVID Breach
  • Antisemitism
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Sexual Assault
  • Paid advocacy (aka bribery)
  • Sexual Harrassment
  • Watched pornography in the chamber
  • Groped two men
  • Investigation into undisclosed matters
  • Bullying
  • Sexual misconduct
  • Went on I’m A Celebrity
  • Investigation into unspecified complaint
  • Investigation into unspecified complaint to Met Police
  • Spread vaccine misinformation
  • Investigated for paid lobbying
  • Antisemitism
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Complaint about conduct
  • Argument with chief whip

Note this doesn’t include Boris Johnson (misled parliament), Nadine Dorries (didn’t get peerage) or Nigel Adams (flounce) who all resigned with the party whip (as did several MPs who had legitimate reasons like taking another public office), or those who defected to another party. Also doesn't include whatever happens to Peter Bone.

If groping two blokes doesn't class as sexual harassment or misconduct then what level did those who got accused of it stoop to?

The in-laws love Pete Bone, never been sure why, always comes across as a right cunt.

I think this is a case of it was widely known what Pincher has done, but the other cases where it just says sexual misconduct, specifics have not been mentioned.

The editing of that LBC immediately raises suspicions.  If I go and find a longer clip will I find that Starmer has just been referring to Israel’s right to defend itself, hence “that right”?

 Edit: indeed he did

And goes on to clarify his point immediately following the clip.

The power of the edit on display here, cut cleverly and distribute on social media, and 99% of people won’t double check.

Double edit: whilst I’m here, it’s disappointing that Israel’s barbaric strike on a church in Gaza got very little publicity in comparison to PIS’ misfire that hit the hospital.  Hitting a church full of civilians is precisely the sort of potential war crime that should be making the headlines.

Nah. I watched the full interview previously and Starmer was really cagey, and super careful not to condemn Israel's actions in any way. The spirit of his message was very much as it is being conveyed.

The clip of him walking it back is very short though. Would be keen to see if there's more context to that, and also how he positions himself going forward.

We'll have to agree to disagree because that original small edit was clearly designed to suggest he was explicitly supporting a siege including withholding water etc, and he quite evidently (to me) wasn't.  It feels like people are combing his every word looking for slip-ups.

Agreed the walk-back clip is also short, I will go search out that longer one too.

EDIT:- There's also been a number of councillor resignations over Starmer's stance. Some interesting letters and videos in the thread below this main tweet.

Maybe Starmer should claim he was going to sling them out for being antisemites anyway just like he's done with certain other members and former members of his party.
