The General Politics Thread v2.0 (AKA the "Labour are Cunts" thread)

Apropos of nothing, but I came across this speech from Dennis Healey earlier, from 1959.

Quote

"Hugh Gaitskell was absolutely right when he said yesterday that what gets cheers at this conference does not necessarily get votes at elections. If it did we would have won Devonport. There are far too many people who… want to luxuriate complacently in moral righteousness in Opposition. But who is going to pay the price for their complacency?

You can take the view that it it better to give up half a loaf if you cannot get the whole loaf, but the point is that it is not we who are giving up the half loaf. In Britain it is the unemployed and old aged pensioners, and outside Britain there are millions of people in Asia and Africa who desperately need a Labour Government in this country to help them. If you take the view that it is all right to stay in Opposition so long as your Socialist heart is pure, you will be ‘all right, Jack’. You will have your TV set, your motor car and your summer holidays on the Continent and still keep your Socialist soul intact. The people who pay the price for your sense of moral satisfaction are the Africans, millions of them, being slowly forced into racial slavery; the Indians and the Indonesians dying of starvation.

We are not just a debating society. We are not just a Socialist Sunday School. We are a great movement that wants to help real people living on this earth at the present time. We shall never be able to help them unless we get power. We shall never get their power unless we close the gap between our active workers and the average voter in the country."

This was really right in the middle of the factional warfare that tore the Labour Party apart in the 1950s.  Healey backed Harold Wilson for leader of the Party in 1963 and of course ended up being a Cabinet Minister in the Labour governments following Wilson's GE victory in 1964, ending 13 years of continual Conservative Government.

Edit: didn't see your post before this @SuperBacon, this isn't a reply to that, more an interesting parallel to where Labour find themselves right now.

Queen of the babs and working class cosplayer Jess Phillips resigned her shadow cabinet role to vote for a ceasefire. Some might say that she has taken a principled stance. Maybe she has for once.

In unconnected news, her constituency has a large Muslim demographic and had she voted with the party line, she very likely would lose their support and lose her seat on the gravy train at the upcoming election.

Or you could say that she listened to the views of her constituents and voted in line with their wishes, which is what an MP should do rather than just follow the party line. While that may keep her on the gravy train you are calling her a cunt for doing what the majority of her constituents would want. You can't have it all ways.

She is all about herself and self preservation. Whilst what you say is exactly right regarding what an MP should be doing, I believe her decision is for her own benefit and not her constituents.

All MP's who aren't standing down are about self preservation. An MP who doesn't get elected is just some person who had 500 quid spare to run for office. Like I said, feel free to hate Jess Phillips but she is still only doing what other MP's of all parties do.

Cheers, I will.

One of the things I admire about you Keith is your capacity to hate. I can hate 2 maybe 3 things at a time, after that I slide down the scale of dislike until we get to mild annoyance which would be something like: Why can't my sister open my car door without locking it as she gets out? I find that mildly annoying. You though Keith can hate on multiple fronts over an indefinite time, and I for one salute you.
