Burnham is going to have to run on an explicit 'if you want rid of this cunt, vote me' platform. It's a risk but it very much looks like a calculated one showing that he and Labour can beat Reform in the areas that are tight. They've chosen that MP, and area, deliberately IMO. Quote

That would be terrible news for Labour, but you may as well find it out now and have three years to think/pray for a plan C. Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted May 19 Paid Members Posted May 19 I do wonder whether this is why Stermer is letting it happen, because he doesn't think Burnham's gamble is going to pay off. It's also going to be interesting to see whether any other parties will put candidates forward or just see what happens in a two horse race. Mrs Jazzy and I had a little trip to Blackpool to take the dogs for a run on the beach last night. Blackpool Tower now only lights up in one colour as a reminder of which party runs the council. It really is pathetic. Katie Hopkins is doing a thing on North Pier in July as well. Quote
Paid Members FLips Posted May 19 Paid Members Posted May 19 In defense of Blackpool I wouldn’t expect anything else of them. It’s an incomprehensibly rough shithole that’s both populated and visited almost exclusively by pissed up thickos and white over-60s. It’s a town that somehow feels like it’s holding a perfectly nice coast hostage. Quote

He'd have a complete shitshow on his hands if he had tried to block him again when it's clear to everyone there will actually be a leadership contest imminently. No way he would have survived that. So yeah, he had to gamble that it might fail or that he can beat him because those are the only options. Quote

When I visited Blackpool and the surrounding areas I was genuinely shocked at how much of a shithole it is and how rough, beaten down and manky all the poor souls unfortunate enough to live there looked. It's had a strong Reform /UKIP base for a while, not necessarily a Starmer thing. Greens have an interesting choice, field no candidate to not risk splitting the vote? Or field a candidate to try and weaken the Labour Party, leaving them with Streeting or Starmer? Quote
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted May 19 Moderators Posted May 19 Given that he's shown willingness to work with them and actually been admonished within the labour party for daring to flirt with the idea of a progressive alliance you would think they would want him to be in the top spot in the labour party... At least I'd hope they would be thinking on those lines. Quote

Paid Members LaGoosh Posted May 27 Paid Members Posted May 27 His thing about Labour shouldn't go to the right or left but should focus on radical centrism has pissed me off no end. What exactly is a radical centrist? Someone who makes huge reforms that somehow don't upset or challenge anyone on the left or right wing? Massive structural changes to government policy that have no political ideology behind them at all? How is that possible? Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted May 27 Paid Members Posted May 27 Any time somebody says it's not about right and left and they need to appeal to the centre, they're about to say the most right-wing thing imaginable. Quote

His lobbying for fossil fuels and implication that climate change is a left wing issue is also tiresome, and really kills what he has left of a legacy. It ignores evidence that renewable energy is cheaper, and of the irreversible damage being done through our inability to cut our global carbon footprint. To suggest that the North Sea is the answer to any of our energy woes, at best, extremely misleading. I don’t know if he’s doing it because he genuinely believes it or just likes the money, but it’s so bloody dangerous to make suggestions like these. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted May 27 Paid Members Posted May 27 what's frustrating is that the only people who take his input seriously are the people in power. Everyone else recognises that he's a generational cunt. Quote
