Make his matches and appearances an event, make them a big part of a story and have him as the Okada style “final boss” of AEW. Spot on. And I think this is something AEW is guilty of generally, which is to be so excited about putting on rasslin' matches that they don't stop to think whether it's necessarily worth it. Moxley is on TV... wrestling, bleeding... every week. Even if you have him chew up chumps, you're going to burn through most of the roster quickly enough, and burn him out too (he's another one looking knackered). MJF is the one top guy (besides Sting)they've actually seemed keen to hold off on, to build some anticipation, to make seem like a singles match is a big deal. Undoubtedly part of the mystique of Reigns and Lesnar is that they very rarely actually wrestle. They're the final boss battle. It also means they will be able to continue wrestling 10 times a year for another decade. AEW needs a couple of those guys, the big attractions - for me that should be Moxley and Omega, but I understand that if you sent Moxley home he'd sit there stabbing himself in the face with a fork anyway, so you might as well have that on tv. Their next biggest attraction is Danielson, but again he seems determined to blind himself permanently in one eye and won't slow down. ----- Thinking longer term, what happens when Omega, Danielson and Moxley are gone? It feels like the floodgates in WWE have shut again, in fact the tide is going the other way. So you want your top guys to stay healthy and active for as long a time as possible. Tyson Fury's not fighting 52 times a year. Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted December 15, 2023 Paid Members Posted December 15, 2023 (edited) The "good in Japan" thing is annoying because it's basically a viewpoint that you're only really good if you fit the mould of what makes someone a star in the US, or more specifically what makes someone a star in WWE. Kenny Omega doesn't fit the WWE star mould so people will and have written him off for that. But there should be more than one way to be a star or big time in professional wrestling. Kenny could never pull off your typical big US wrestling style promos or angles, but there's not many people who can pull off a top level Kenny Omega match. He's totally unique and that comes with cons as well as all the massive pros. Saying otherwise is completely overlooking that Kenny was a fantastic World Champion, came off as a total star in his run, was a central part of the best story they've ever done and was on top during the hottest period the company has had to date. Earlier this year he had one of the best matches of the year at Forbidden Door which had probably the best rope break and best 1 count in wrestling history. He's had tremendous singles matches with Moxley, Vikingo, MJF and Takeshita. Kenny Omega is great but he's definitely in a rough patch at this certain moment in time. I'm sure with the right booking he can get back on track and would agree that special attraction singles matches against top stars is the way to go. He can go all out then take time off to heal up. Funnily enough one of my favourite matches of Omega in New Japan was when he dropped the belt to Tanahashi, where Tana had been having a fair few matches where he looked broken down and on his last legs, and played that match like he couldnt keep up with Kenny - getting himself to the top rope for what ended up the match-winning High Fly Flow looked like it took virtually the last of his "life bar" but - Christ! - he did it. I'd love to see knackered Omega emulate that kind of performance today, bell to bell. Which isnt the issue. Quote
Paid Members Nick James Posted December 15, 2023 Paid Members Posted December 15, 2023 What an absolutely bonkers few pages. Omega is one of the only people that I had heard a lot about, hyped to shit my most corners of the internet yet I had absolutely no experience with until AEW started, that I 100% understood and agreed with the hype. He is brilliant when he switches it on. One dud promo does not a bad wrestler make. Quote

Wish I could give this more than one upvote. Exaaaaactly. I know that bringing Indy/Japan/Lucha darlings down a peg or two has perhaps felt necessary in the past in response to the dreaded DEM WANS claiming that Cena is rubbish because he doesn’t do enough MOVEZ or whatever. I get that, but man, being good enough to be a top star in Japan is still pretty damn good. It’s a shame to see that discounted completely because they might not be WWE superstar material. The Gaffer Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 There's about seven posts to every one that's like "I'm not that into Kenny". Of which there's maybe...two posts? My own included? The sky's not falling in, chaps. He'll be fine. Quote
organizedkaos Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 (edited) He's definitely a bit knackered but also had multiple matches this year that'll be in conversation for MOTY candidate so yeah... Wrestling fans is a like sort of version of the yorkshireman sketch. "Yeah Kenny definitely can't put on weekly bangers any more" "Yeah Kenny is definitely in the tail end of his career" "Yeah Kenny is completely broken down, can't go any more" "Yeah Kenny is so overweight and has been broken down for half a decade now" "Kenny was only good for 3 weeks in 2018" "Kenny is literally the worst wrestler on AEW television" "Kenny is dead, he's a corpse being puppeted by his opponent" Edited December 15, 2023 by organizedkaos Quote

Joe Blog Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 What is the deal with the Bucks? Are they injured or have they taken their ball home? Quote
Daddymagic Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Few thoughts .... - Poor Ricky Starks. He tried his hardest here but the Golden Twats did their best to cut his legs off. - Remember when Jericho would fuck off for a year and come back fresh. He really needs to do that. He is stale and it's staring to tarnish his legacy. - No idea why they are presenting Omega as R Truth knock off. He should be used as a special attraction and in serious feuds. - Was on a par with the Edge / Starks promo for me. Copeland was an unprofessional as his fellow Canandians. Quote

They're doing VP stuff, like working on that comprehensive medical coverage for all wrestlers that they talked about when AEW was founded. Quote

He's had a few dodgy promos but he's still absolutely one of the best wrestlers in the world with an insanely great body of work. Let's not write him off based on a shite Jericho segment. Thank you. I was shaking my head at this ridiculous overreaction. Hasn't he done about 4 mad head drop bumps since he signed his new contract? Not sure I'd be questioning his commitment. And he's being compared to Kevin Nash because he can't do comedy? Edited December 15, 2023 by gmoney Quote

I think they're just having some time off (both have been banged up this year) before returning for a heel run. They were leaning that way in the last few weeks they were on TV, throwing a strop and smashing up ringside when they lost etc. Quote

Paid Members Supremo Posted December 15, 2023 Paid Members Posted December 15, 2023 Best way to have a career in AEW. Work through injuries, put off surgery, giving you the perfect escape whenever the Jericho Vortex eventually sucks you in. Well played, Kenneth. Quote
