There was a question along the lines of “Which of the following is recognised as being Cockney rhyming slang?” After everyone had voted, Tim asks the audience for other examples which lead to a cacophony of “apples and pears!” and “trouble and strife!” etc etc. But one lone voice pierced through the lot, as it shouted “Double decker!”, causing a hush to fall on the room. “I’m not familiar with that one” says Vine, a little perplexed. “What does that mean?” ”Bus!”… Also, was Threesome with the lovely Emily Booth a Channel 5 show? Whittle had no right to be good but it was. I think mainly because it didn't take itself seriously whatsoever when the 90s had been filled with game shows with hosts telling crap jokes but they took themselves far to seriously. A 5th channel at the time seemed like a big thing, now days there are so many free to watch channels that it's amazing it took until 97 to have a 5th. Paid Members air_raid Posted March 31, 2022 Paid Members Share Posted March 31, 2022 Important England games shown on C5 included 2-0 away to Poland in May 97 where Jonathan Pearce was insufferable, screaming “SHEARERRRRRRRRRRR!” at the opening goal in a manner that make Martin Tyler blush in the wake of Aguero 2012, and constantly calling Gascoigne’s touches with “Gazza” like they were mates. They also had Albania away in (IIRC) March 2001 by which time Pearce had calmed down a bit and makes me chuckle in hindsight about “at last, Cole, the goal for England” because it would be Andy’s first and his last. This is my real memory of 5 in the beginning though :

Paid Members BomberPat Posted March 31, 2022 Paid Members Share Posted March 31, 2022 I basically never watched Channel 5, because it wasn't available in the bit of East Yorkshire I lived in at launch. Maybe it was a Kingston Communications thing, I can't remember. By the time I was able to get it, we had Sky Digital, so another channel wasn't all that exciting. So my main memory of the channel is when we were living in Jersey, and my Dad had retired and was due to move back to Yorkshire, the night before my parents left, I sat with them in the flat they were staying in and silently watched three episodes of a Channel 5 series about the fall of the Tsars. My highlight of the early days of Channel 5 was The People vs Jerry Sadowitz. Members of the public tried to have a half decent conversation with Jerry, but usually he would tell them to fuck off and the person would be escorted off stage by 'The Bouncer' Dave Courtney. Occasionally there was a guest bouncer, with one such occasion Mark E Smith taking the mantle. It was a mad show and there doesn't appear to be any footage of it anywhere online. Another half-decent show was Bring Me The Head of Light-Entertainment which gave TV debuts to a lot of upcoming comics in the late 90's but was the launching pad for Graham Norton's career. hallicks
Tried tuning the telly for months to find it, the best I could get was slightly different static to the usual. Had the internet in my bedroom by mid ‘99 so I was taken care of after that.

Sadowidz is pretty efficient when it comes to getting things of his taken off youtube, so if it ever goes up, it's down pretty quickly. I loved that show. He did another show that was a mix of magic and sketches that I forget the name of. I remember really liking it, but the only thing I remember clearly was a piss take of David Blaine where he did the throwing a card at the car window, but instead of the card embedding in it, it smashed through the window. Didn't they also have the Terminator Chronicles show with Lena Headey? I've also just remembered that 5 also showed Person Of Interest, which is fucking great by the way, before they started shifting it round 5Star and 5USA and all the other shit sub channels. Moderators neil Posted March 31, 2022 Moderators Share Posted March 31, 2022 I enjoyed Family Affairs to be honest. Although Cordelia Bugeja may have been why I think that. Couldn't believe it when they blew them all up on a boat.
Tamura
This. Absolutely barking mad sports competition (there's plenty more on Youtube), including a 3 metre sprint and a slightly more conventional 100 metre sprint albeit round a circular 10 metre track. Somehow this never reached the dizzy heights of Big Brother. Edited March 31, 2022 by Tamura

Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted March 31, 2022 Author Paid Members Share Posted March 31, 2022 Loved Clive off Family Affairs. The first openly gay man to have an eating disorder. Groundbreaking in many ways.

Nah, way after that, that was early 90s. Doing a bit of research I think it was The Jerry @trick Show
