Paid Members Carbomb Posted October 8 Paid Members Posted October 8 Just had a cross-trivia moment. I realised I didn't know what made Padel different from tennis and squash, so looked it up, and saw this in the history of it. Quote The sport was invented in 1969 in Acapulco, Mexico,[4] by Enrique Corcuera,[1][5] after he modified his squash court to incorporate elements of platform tennis.[6] Initially, he called it "Padel Corcuera". In the beginning, courts used concrete walls and surfaces, which obscured visibility for spectators. To improve the viewing experience and gameplay, these were eventually replaced by glass walls and artificial turf.[7] Corcuera had many friends who came to visit him, trying out the new sport he had invented, amongst them Frank Sinatra and Henry Kissinger.[1] One of his friends was Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, who learned about padel visiting Corcuera in Acapulco. Which reminded me of this posted yesterday, and @Fog Dude's follow-up that it's an old posho German family. On 10/7/2026 at 8:34 AM, Statto said: Quote

Absolute wankers. Just like music journalists who say albums have landed in their emails and "boy, I can't wait for you all to hear this one!" I think one of his relatives was the sole representative of Mexico at a past Winter Olympics, in skiing? That's one minor annoyance put to bed then. As for padel: a whole load of new courts just opened up down the road from here, but whenever my Dad visits he'd prefer to find somewhere to play pickleball instead these days. Quote

Tim Healys Chutney Spoon Posted Saturday at 08:09 PM Posted Saturday at 08:09 PM Ignoring the obvious here, but I was at Westlife at the O2 last night and we'd paid a LOT of money for floor seats near the front. (Wife has been desperate to see them for yonks and we thought we'd splash out for a special night out) Thats not the irritation, the annoyance is that there was a woman just in front of us that was basically live streaming the whole gig....but filming herself and spending the whole time filming herself and looking at herself in her phone as opposed to enjoying the music that she'd clearly spent hundreds on. What a waste of time and well done on distracting everyone around you with your awful singing and 'look at me' dancing whilst being live for her 12 followers.... Quote

Paid Members Accident Prone Posted Tuesday at 06:17 AM Paid Members Posted Tuesday at 06:17 AM There was an episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks where Louis Walsh was a contestant and got grilled by Mark Lemar for repping Westlife. I haven't seen it in decades but whenever I hear "Westlife" the interaction pops into my head and I smile. It goes something like; Mark: Westlife....aren't very good, are they? Louis: They've sold a lot of records. Mark: Name one good Westlife song. - Louis hesitates and stutters - Mark: Ah..... Quote
Paid Members johnnyboy Posted Tuesday at 12:02 PM Paid Members Posted Tuesday at 12:02 PM (edited) I can never forgive Westlife for taking one of the greatest songs of all-time ("The Dance") and running it through the Blandeiser 3000 to turn it into a below average album track. Took Mrs JB to see them a few times around the turn of the century before they'd committed this cringe against humanity and they put on a decent show, tbf. Paid Members Jazzy G Posted Tuesday at 03:59 PM Paid Members Posted Tuesday at 03:59 PM The ex used to be obsessed with them. She'd see them at least once every time they went on tour. We could be struggling to pay the bills and as soon as they were on tour she had to see which of the gigs her fellow "Westlife looneys" were going to and go with them, even if it meant her spending a weekend in Ireland while I was stuck at home to look after her family. If I wanted to pop for an afternoon at a friend's it turned into a huge inconvenience, but that summer of pumping hundreds of pounds into some random person on facebook's bank account so she could play random games of bingo or be entered into raffles for tickets to see them at Wembley was probably getting towards the straw that broke the dromedary. When I lived with my mum at the pub after I left I would flip if the jukebox's auto-random select put a Westlife song on and immediately have to cancel it. I'd put up with it if somebody had paid to put them on as that's their right to, but I've flown across the pub if a random Westlife song came on because of what I was put through. Properly triggered.
