Paid Members tiger_rick Posted January 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 16, 2025 Realised taking in this Switch 2 news that despite not being a particularly prolific gamer, we've owned the SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Colour, GameCube, DS, 3DS, N64, Wii, Wii U and Switch. I had some Game & Watch handhelds too. Never realised what a massive Nintendo stan I apparently am. Need to get a NES now for a full bingo card. Quote
DavidB6937 Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 At the moment I've got a PS5, Meta Quest 2, a Steam Deck, an original Switch for me and a newer one for my daughters that they share. And they all serve their own purposes so there's definitely room in the market for various things if you're smart about it. I'll even occasionally subscribe to the streaming Game Pass too. I think price point will definitely be a decider for people picking up Switch 2 though or at least when. I absolutely want one but will be interesting to see what's on offer and how they pitch it. Paid Members Chris B Posted January 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 16, 2025 It does look, to me at least, like they're aware the Steam Deck is a major competitor to them - this looks very much like a 'Don't bother with the Steam Deck, get this' to me. Quote

If its just wall to wall Mario/Zelda etc. Wall to wall two of the best and most popular game series of all time. Oh no. How terrible. Edited January 16, 2025 by LaGoosh Quote

Never said it was terrible, but not everyone likes Mario and Zelda. But I get all you guys points, I'll probably be picking one up myself, depending on the price. Quote
Paid Members FLips Posted January 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 16, 2025 Unsubstantiated rumours but some of the motions and IR sensor placement in the trailer have people convinced there will be mouse-like functionality in the Joy-Cons which would actually be a game changer when it comes to ports of things like Two Point and Civ. Maybe a Mario Paint built in tech demo? Quote
Mr_Danger Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 Nintendo have both the niche and casual gamer market down. GTA would be a big title for them but GTA would be a big title for a calculator if you could play it on one of them. Quote
Merzbow Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 The moment they even mention Animal Crossing they've won the war for the casuals. Quote
Paid Members Arch Stanton Posted January 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 16, 2025 Interesting to see their strategy on this is very much "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", rather than a reinvented form factor or bold new innovation. Shows the faith they still have in the strength of the Switch brand. I have wanted a Switch for a while, but held off buying one because the rumours of the new console have also been around for ages. I will almost certainly get on board with this one, unless it's a really silly price at release. Quote

DavidB6937 Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 It'll be interesting to see what games we get seeing as so much of the Switch line up was basically ported across from the low selling Wii U. Mad to think that Mario Kart 8 originally came out on that in 2014. I guess there could be room for some remasters or something, or maybe they'll rebrand some of the Switch stuff as good for Switch 2 as well, but you'd hope we'll get a lot more original content this time round hopefully. The Switch sells to people who wouldn't buy the other consoles, it sells to people who don't videogame otherwise AND it sells to people who have a gaming PC and/or other consoles as well. So i think the only place they struggle / the difference this time around is that the Steam deck exists. Personally, if I were making the decision on my handheld gaming needs now it'd be a hard one, whereas when I got a Switch there wasn't even an alternative to consider. I'm sure that's certainly a minority of the population though and they'll still do very well. Quote
DavidB6937 Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 Especially when Steam Deck has competition in that area itself and there's a lot of people that simply won't feel comfortable with an unknown quantity like that vs Nintendo. Quote
The Gaffer Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 Is there even real blood in any Switch games? Quote

Do you mean in 1st party Nintendo games or the Switch as a whole? I think you’d struggle to find much blood in the likes of Mario or Animal Crossing, but you wouldn’t really expect or want it in those. In terms of third party games on the Switch, there’s loads. DOOM, Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat etc. Quote
