It's a hard sell for a non Nintendo fan.

And that's not something they've ever really cared about, so doubt they do now either. There's apparently some fair Microsoft support and we've had some Sony stuff too so it's taking steps in the right direction, but it'll always be Nintendo primarily.

And to be honest if there's a new Mario Kart I'm buying it so that's an easy sell for me and many others I would think. They know what they're doing.

Talk about backwards compatibility, I didn't know you could play PS2 era takes like this in 2025.

Are you actually saying GTA VI isn't a huge release? Also its 2025. But anyway, yeah, GTA is still a huge title, and would be a big get for Nintendo.

No, and I think you know that.

The Switch has sold 150 million units, its the third biggest console of all time. That is a lot of Nintendo fans. I don't think this will do those numbers but it is going to be huge and if a major publisher can get there new or old games to work on it they will.

The people who were saying they would announce it today have also been saying Microsoft are going to go big porting whatever they can to it. Including things like Halo and Forza Horizon. Square Enix are rumoured to port FF7 Remake and Rebirth. Ubisoft will looking to get the new Assassins Creed on it.

I don't tbh. I assumed, sorry that you meant that. But it would be a huge get for Nintendo. And given the rumours its $500. That's a big ask. If its just wall to wall Mario/Zelda etc.

The last point you made there, would be a huge step in the right direction, and would make non Nintendo fans and casuals consider picking one up

My game backlog consists of mostly what would now be termed "retro" titles (though the backlog has existed since they were new), but am currently playing the most modern game I've ever played, the PS5 port of The Last of Us 2. It's very challenging, more in terms of the storyline than the game mechanics. The overall feel I get from the software developers' creative choices is "We're going to piss you off as much as possible". In this sense, it's a very good game indeed, because the gameplay is enjoyable, and they use the unique intersection of story and mechanics of videogames to evoke emotions and then mess around with said emotions.

Casuals have already bought the Switch in absolute droves. They won the fight for the casuals years ago.  It is, to reiterate, the third best selling console of all time.

Yeah the Switch is a continuation of their Blue Ocean strategy. The Switch sells to people who wouldn't buy the other consoles, it sells to people who don't videogame otherwise AND it sells to people who have a gaming PC and/or other consoles as well. The fact that it's a handheld as well hoovers up your former DS buyers, which is also millions of people. You can't understate the value of their incredible first party IPs either. Mario/Zelda mainline games tend to be exceptionally high quality and tremendously popular games that you can't find anywhere else. Pokémon also sells an absurd number of copies. Even if a Pokémon release is critically panned and the fanbase is disappointed, it STILL sells a bajillion copies.

Last gen you'd very often hear the recommendation of PS4 *AND* Switch as the optimal gaming set up. I myself skipped the current MS/Sony consoles this generation and have been more than happy with PC + Switch to cover damn near everything I want to play.

Nintendo consoles are not a hard sell to anyone, to the point that they're not really even in competition with the others.

They know what they're good at though. They know their target market. They know how to stand out and survive against other companies that have struggled over the years.

Even Microsoft have had to chop and change around various things the past few years because of the different ways people are playing now and looking towards streaming and porting their games over rather than relying solely on XBox as it is.

So Nintendo were sensible to stick with what works for them. They could've tried to come out with another wacky thing but instead they've focused on what works, improved it and I would imagine they'll have a fairly reasonable price point to it as well if they can.

"Wall to wall Mario/Zelda etc" is actually more than enough to attract a LOT of people to their consoles in the first place and then they'll buy other stuff. Never underestimate how popular those things are. Not to suggest GTA isn't but that's not what anyone is buying a Switch for.

True, its a fair point, I'd even consider buying one for the portability aspect! I haven't owned a portable console since....the PSP? The Steam Deck is good too but its rather expensive, just gotta see how much this does cost.

That isn't what the Switch is.

Oh, and the Switch has become the most natural second home for indie games as it automatically makes them portable and so many of them work brilliantly in that format. Indie games launching first on "PC and Switch" then getting the other ports later is common, as is the almost clichéd term that a game is "Perfect for Switch".  Slay the Spire is a prime example for me. Over 1000 hours on PC but I still bought it again on Switch so I can play it on the train.
