Same, I adore the gorgeous Toriyama designs of Dragon Quest but none of them bar VIII have stood out to me. I don't get much of the series hype, it's maybe just too trad-JRPG for me and I like something weirder.

My gateway into JRPGs was Final Fantasy 7, then going back and playing the rest of the series, then Secret of Mana, Earthbound and Chrono Trigger and whatnot.

I wasted untold hours on the various RPG Makers over the years, from 95 through to (I think) VX, and every now and then think about going back and trying one, but never have the time or the effort required to put into it.

Playing this Dragon Quest game, and particularly the bits where it all goes 2D and 16-bit pixel graphics, and the battles are just static monster sprites, it's just been a dawning realisation of, "oh,Ā that'sĀ what everything in RPG Maker was mimicking". Everything about the series has been kind of codified as to becomeĀ thatĀ generic.

There have been some fun touches, but so far it is all very twee, very predictable, and very generic, and I don't particularly care about the story as is, but there's enough to keep me playing. The style of voice acting, characterisation, and how each town has its own gimmick, just keeps reminding me of Ni No Kuni, which is a much better game.

Really wanted to get into Dragon Quest XI after enjoying IX on the DS. As a handheld game the very linear and basic style worked for IX but XI was a chore.

I played the original release before they added the Japanese voices and 16 bit mode and had to stop playing once I unlocked Sylvando because while the english voice acting had been appalling to that point he was even worse and the gameplay hadnā€™t been good enough to warrant having to listen to an entire cast of shit voice acting for that many hours.

I was interested when it went onto Gamepass in playing with the changed voice acting but then remembered the game was so boring anyway it wouldnā€™t likely change my opinion so I just left it.

Bravely Default was a great example of taking an old school style of JRPG and refreshing it with the added bonus of many quality of life additions. It's pretty much an early Final Fantasy with the job system but there's a great combat overhaul and the ability to speed things up or even turn off random battles if you just want to get from A to B.

Loved it, though could have done without the "now do half the game again" time travel mechanic.Ā

They'd only just rebranded, too. This was the western mobile game division over at Square so it might not effect much of what we'd play but it's shit to see a team just disbanded like that.

Is that the studio that made Guardians of the Galaxy that theyā€™d not long bought?

Tempted this time if I'm honest.

Me too. Haven't read all the details yet, but for Ā£530 on top of the console I'm assuming it has a full tantric bodysuit and a built-in game licensed by PornHub.

Have you tried Dragon Quest V? That's one of my favourite JRPGs, based largely on how unique it is. You travel around with your family, and they, in turn, are the party that fight alongside you. I'm not sure I've seen that formula used elsewhere. In addition, you can catch monsters to fight alongside you, Pokemon style (and this game was originally released before Pokemon) - there's so much to love about it.Ā

The DS version is the best one, if you can get hold of it - although it costs an absolute fortune these days.Ā

I have an R4 currently in my 3DS to play old DS games, I'll stick it on that.
