Not necessarily that he's got it right this time, but, given his MO before, he might be still trying to get back in by sitting out until the clamour for him gets loud enough. It's probably not the case, but I really hope that that's what he was planning, then he goes and loses his MP seat, and it all blows up in his smug, bloated face. It feels much like after Brexit - he must know that whoever takes the job now is inheriting a very poisoned chalice, and it's not worth the risk. Much better to wait for someone else to fuck up and then walk in as the saviour; and while Liz Truss has obviously fucked up massively, the damage is done, and he doesn't want to fix that mess, he wants someone else to do the groundwork first. The sensible thing for the Tories to do would be to recognise that they're fucked, and find a competent, presentable, safe pair of hands to steer them through an early election knowing that they're going to lose, but with the political nous to navigate that and rebuild well in opposition. Problem is, they've burned through any competent politicians they have left and are stuck with the absolute dregs. I say problem, if it leads to complete political destruction of the Tory Party, that's no problem at all. A period of majority for the Labour Party can hopefully see that party sort out some of its internal contradictions and bullshit. Quote
69MeDon Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 I was hoping Johnson would get back in, simply because I felt that was the quickest route to further chaos and an election and having us rid of the Tory scum for a good decade or more. Also I just like to watch the world burn. Quote
Paid Members JNLister Posted October 24, 2022 Paid Members Posted October 24, 2022 Sunak had 193 nominations from named MPs. Johnson claimed "at least 102" and some journalists claim they've had this independently confirmed. Mourdant supporters claimed she had 90 with an hour left till the nominations closed. That accounts for 385 of the 357 possible votes. Quote
Loki Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 Presumably some of Johnson’s flipped to Sunak and Mordaunt after he pulled out. Even so, his claim of v 100 is as patent a lie as the one about building toy buses. Quote
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted October 24, 2022 Moderators Posted October 24, 2022 (edited) Hilarious that he's been handed the tob job with no competition after having just been resoundingly defeated in a contest with the woman who only ended up lasting less than two months. A message the meaning of which will of course completely elude the idiots in the party membership who haven't been allowed to fuck it up this time. There'll definitely be a quiet rule change there in a few months when the dust has settled. Edited October 24, 2022 by Chest Rockwell Quote

Keith Houchen Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 I really hope, probably optimistically, that we will soon see the last of talentless pisspipes like Mogg, Cleverly, Zahawi et al after their shameless and embarrassing declarations of support for the only person to lead for different people in a 24 hour period Quote

My understanding is that the membership fucking hate Sunak anyway. When he resigned as chancellor, his public approval went up pretty drastically but his approval ratings with Tory members plummeted, and they seem to see him as being instrumental in "bringing down" Boris Johnson, rather than just being one of the first rats to leave a sinking ship. Beyond that, plenty of Tories hated him for giving "hand-outs" during the pandemic, and generally for not pursuing a completely economy-first approach to Covid. Oh, and he's brown. Quote
