UKFF Netflix / Amazon Prime Recommendations Thread

Thought we should have a thread for Netflix content as it tends to drop with no fanfare so can be hard to spot!  Fuck megathreads.

EDIT: my ruling is that any content available on Netflix is fair game, even if it's not original to them.  If Netflix is the place to watch it in the UK, bring it on.

The Good Place is a surprisingly smart, unclichéd comedy.  Doesn't go where you expect it, and some likeable characters.

On a similar tip, Russian Doll is a lot better than the preview suggests.  There's a real quality feel to it, like a Woody Allen film or something.

Netflix is producing some seriously good tv now.  What are you watching?

Films too I reckon.

On that subject, Wheelman is a really nice slick thriller in the vein of The Driver or The Transporter.  It could have done with a more charismatic lead, but the direction and production is ace, and the sound is excellent.  More like that would be most welcome.

Wheelman was alright, yeah. Not the best Netflix original but still enjoyable enough.

These are worth seeing though:-

* Spectral - Cracking action / horror / sci-fi thing that deserved a hell of a lot more attention. A really good idea very well executed. Would love a sequel to this.

* I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore - Arguably their best original to date. Brilliant black comedy, really daft but also has a lovely ending.

* Deirdra & Laney Rob a Train - Nice spin on the coming of age film, works well as a crime comedy too. Tim Blake Nelson is the best.

* Tramps - From Adam Leon who made the superb Gimme the Loot, this is almost as good. Superb romdram.

* Okja - Absolute lunacy that defies categorisation, but also very funny and enjoyable, if a bit long.

* Gerald's Game - One of the best Stephen King adaptations of all time. Mike Flanagan is probably the best specialist horror director around right now.

* Calibre - Stunning British thriller with clever echoes of The Wicker Man. This deserved to be huge.

* The Night Comes for Us - One of the few Indonesian actioners that lives up to the hype. Relentlessly entertaining even if the director is a touchy Twitter vanity searcher.

* Cam - One of the few films about sex work that actually tells a balanced story, and a great thriller to boot.

Fucking hell I'd forgotten all about this. It's excellent, but that hand scene. Ugh.

I've been really enjoying The Kirlian Frequency lately.

It's an Argentinian animated series, apparently originally a YouTube thing, and each episode is only about 10 minutes long. It's about a DJ, in a mysterious town, broadcasting constantly in some kind of vague post-apocalyptic environment, taking phone calls from people affected by supernatural or horror tropes. Bits of Lovecraft and Stephen King influence in there too.

I binged watched the hell out of You. Great series. Really creepy at times and makes you think about shutting down all your social media accounts.

You starts out good, but I thought it ran out of steam with a couple of episodes to go. It's undeniably creepy.

I'd add that they have the Dollars Trilogy up ready to watch. 'Nuff said.

Also, if you're after some documentaries, I enjoyed Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami, LA 92 and The Reagan Show. The Grace Jones one tells the story of her career but also features modern performances throughout, and fully exploits the undeniable charisma of Jones.
LA 92 is a brutal watch, at times, but is something you must definitely check out. As the name suggests, it's about the 92 riots in LA.
The Reagan Show uses outtakes of all the many interviews Reagan has done for a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at the man. Some folk will moan it paints Reagan with more warmth than he deserves, but I found it to be fascinating.

Hampstead - Widower Diane Keaton strikes up an unlikely friendship with oddball Brendan Gleeson, who is living in a hut in the field across the road from her gaff. Nice little film that loses its way a bit towards the end, but still left me with a lovely warm fuzzy feeling.

Cardboard Gangsters - Irish film set in Dublin. Two gangs are at each other and their families over who sells what sort of drugs and whereabouts they do it. Not familiar with most of the cast in this tbh but really enjoyed it.

I watched the Ted Bundy Interviews this week. Just four one hour shows so a straight forward watch. I realised that I knew very little about him: he was a serial killer in the 70s and... that's about it.

The format is better than I expected, the interviews form very little of the content, it's essentially a history of his crimes with the occasional clip of him talking over it. His charisma is off the charts, and court footage of him acting as his own defense counsel is brilliant. Another highlight is the police's inability to keep him in custody. Well worth a watch.

I love that film, yet barely anyone I know has watched it. It won the Sundance Award as well. Its one of those weird ones where if it hadn't been purchased by NETFLIX it might have received a wider audience. There was little to no fanfare of it being on there.

Elijah Wood is just doing what he wants now isn't he? That sweet LOTR money
