westlondonmist
They don't call me the Hammersmith crumpet radar for nothing! A great TV show, each episode is great as an individual. I hate it when people say it is just crass humour, it is actually quite clever. Two guys who seem to detest each other but live together purely so they have someone to socialise with and so they have someone to feel superior to. It ages well due to a lack of comments on what was happening at the time. Who was mentioned apart from Michael Burke, Julia Sommerville and Michael Burke? Give me this over any modern comedy, I'd rather stick a pineapple violently into my rectum than watch The Big Bang Theory.
Mr_Danger
Someone mentioned Bottom in the unpopular opinions thread I think about it being shit once you've grown out of it but i agree with what was said about it's slapstick quality in here and would argue it makes it timeless in its own way. Like a vulgar Laurel and Hardy. Slapstick and physical comedy done right is funny no matter how dated it is.

Paid Members Bus Surfer Posted August 20, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted August 20, 2018 I've always wanted to walk into a sex shop and ask for 5 quids worth. "We... Are men of SCIENCE" Such a quotable show. Endless amounts of gold.
Paid Members SpiritOfTheForest Posted August 20, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted August 20, 2018 Special mention to Dave Hedgehog and Spudgun. Those two had me cracking up in pretty much every scene they were in. "So what brings you around here?" "....the bus" Totally agree with the general consensus that it's a work of genius. I love that show and oh so very quotable. A friend of mine's also a big fan and every time it's his birthday I make sure to include "from all the lads on the Ark Royal" on any birthday message to him. Rik really was the King of ridiculous facial expressions wasn't he? Could make you fall about laughing without saying a word.
Awards Moderator Onyx2 Posted August 20, 2018 Awards Moderator Share Posted August 20, 2018 GAS was just perfect. A mate and I used to recite the whole episode as it was a perfect timer for a walk to Canvey seafront.

The later ones were a bit shit (but "a bit shit" featuring Ade and Rik is still better than most people at their best) but the first two live shows are fucking fantastic. It's Bottom in it's purest form, as well as Ade and Rik at the absolute top of their game. "Now you listen to me buster...you're just a door...I'm Rik FUCKING Mayall! Now close!". "Bloody hell... a line from the script!" So much of that show entered my vernacular. I still use the phrase "Come on, come on, they'll be closed" when trying to hurry someone up. Paid Members Accident Prone Posted August 20, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted August 20, 2018 When my missus talks about uni, she always uses the correct pronunciation of "PROFESSOR!" whilst giving the 'wanker' sign. Fucking hell, it's unbelievable how much Bottom, The Simpsons and Blackadder have influenced my vernacular, especially at home.
stevieg1980
Always a fan of 's Out. The fights are hilarious and I always love Eddie freaking out at the lightning. Happily offended all my missus' family members with this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJqOwyA9iqY Didn't embed unfortunately. Rik happily making fun of the people of Nottingham. Paid Members wandshogun09 Posted August 20, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted August 20, 2018 (edited) I think I've mentioned this before on here but, to this day, whenever someone asks 'what time is it?' you can guarantee that if any combination of me, my brother and sister are in the room we'll reply 'WHAT PLACE OF MAN?' in our very best Richie from the Terror episode. Absolutely love Bottom. It will never be outdated or unfunny to me. There are certain bits of the show that just kill me every time like it's the first time I've seen them. You don't get that with much comedy but stuff like Richie having the dart stuck in his throat in the 'S Out episode when they go camping just cracks me up every time I see it. And that's just one example of so many. I still can't believe Rik Mayall is gone. It's been 4 years already! Of all the celebrity deaths, I think that one probably got me the most. Genuinely gutted. Even more because not only was he hilarious, he seemed a top, top man as well from everything I ever read or heard about him. Was it Monkee on here who contacted him to ask him to sign something for someone's Secret Santa and he wrote back some brilliantly smutty note? I was actually in Hammersmith not long after he died with my mrs and we visited the famous bench from the opening credits. I had to see it while I was there. It still had a load of tributes and notes and stuff on it. Note the big, filthy, stained underpants hanging on the rail behind the bench. Paid Members eugenespeed Posted August 20, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted August 20, 2018 (edited) Its not actually the bench from the opening credits, but one that was placed there shortly after his death. I actually went down there a few nights ago, go every year, there's a Rik Mayall fan group on Facebook called The Rejects that have regular meetings. Usually at the bench first and then off to the nearby Wetherspoons. I'm not actually sure what happened to the original bench or even it's precise location, but that bench was unveiled in 2014, pretty much for the reason as to how iconic the bench in the opening credits was. (The building site they were on during the credit sequence is now that shopping centre over the road). (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-30018809 - Rik Mayall 'Bottom' bench unveiled in Hammersmith) There are no tributes there now other than the plaque on the back of the bench, mostly due to wear and tear and also because some bastards kept nicking them.
