Believe me, I completely understand your bewilderment. I’m genuinely stunned how I’ve never made the connection. My girlfriend said her knee was bruised from kneeling in the garden yesterday, and I made a joke along the lines of “wahey, I get it, your knees are bruised because you were KNEEling”, and only then it clicked.
