Bit of a geeky one but TIL that Firmware is called that because it exists between hardware and software

Hard

Firm

Soft

Should have called it semi-ware

Slightly also geeky but TIL that CAPTCHA (those annoying challenge/puzzle type things things that prove you are not a bot that you see on some websites ) is an acronym.

It stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart..

That’s totally manufactured and is a massive stretch. I’m not having that.

Part of me is thinking that, but then why else would it be spelled CAPTCHA?

Maybe it came from the same period as TWAIN (Technology Without An Important Name)?

Oh yeah I get it but it’s not organic in the slightest and has clearly been put together in some brainstorming session full of twats.

You might be right :

”A CAPTCHA (/kæp.tʃə/, a contrived acronymfor "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart") is a type of challenge–response test used in computingto determine whether or not the user is human.[1]”

”The term was coined in 2003 by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, Nicholas J. Hopper, and John Langford.[2] The most common type of CAPTCHA (displayed as Version 1.0) was first invented in 1997 by two groups working in parallel. ”

Today I learned that in 2021, Mothers Day and Steak and Blowjob Day both fall on the same date, Sunday 14 March. I'm quite disturbed by this.

Don't ask your mum for a blowjob and you'll be fine.

Nothing stopping every one else asking MPDTT’s mum, though…

...that the "Renegade Edition" of Highlander II: The Quickening was actually a complete re-working of the premise to mitigate the shit sci-fi plot-hole. I never bothered with it because I thought it was just one of those director's cuts and figured it probably couldn't do much to improve it, but having been given a précis of the synopsis by a mate, I'm now intrigued and would like to see it.

Said mate did inform me that it's still not brilliant, but that it's still miles better, and at least a lot more fun, which the original patently was not.
