Made over $300 million off a $40 million budget. That's why they still make them.

Watched a super little film today called Grabbers. I do love a monster movie but this one was especially good. Like a cross between Tremors and The Guard, terrific.

My mate did the music for that!  He also did the music for A:I.  Very talented chap.  Great film as well, just the right mix of comedy and horror.

I've always considered Ledgers performance in TDK to be grossly over appreciated. He's not exactly Jake Lamotta is he. Its the fucking Joker, how hard can it be to play him. I mean, Mark Hamill is a great Joker according to some people I know who watch kids cartoons.

I feel the same way about the whole cast and performances in Goodfellas...

@Devon Malcolm I was so, so, SO excited about The Snowman after a few pre-release screenings compared it to Seven and Prisoners. Is it just Partridge Shrug Gif or is it actually decent, bar the end?

I'm looking forward to Brawl in Cell Block 99 tonight. My mate texted me saying it's absolutely savage and that cunt doesn't like movies because they're not real life.

I have a similar opinion of most actors in comic book movies; when people were up in arms about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman...it's not exactly King Lear, is it? Putting on a cowl and punching people, I'm sure that's within his range. But I think Ledger's performance as The Joker is excellent because he takes what could easily be a one-dimensional character and breathes life into it, gives it nuance and depth that wasn't necessarily there in any prior performance. Hamill is great, but he plays the Joker as a deranged cartoon character - which is fine, that's the context he's performing in - but, while I don't have any truck with people who try and argue that Batman, and the Nolan films in particular, are more "plausible" or "real" than other superhero stories, Ledger does make the character seem as believable as it could possibly be, and hints at backstory and emotional layers that the film doesn't go into.

He probably is over-appreciated, but largely because the films themselves are, and because we've had years of unimaginative pricks in bad Halloween costumes every year, but it was still a superb performance.

IDK, at the time I was blown away, but I don't think it's aged well at all. Every time I've watched it since, it's pretty clear Oldman and Eckhart are the performances that hold up. I think the fact people ripped it off for 5 years didn't help.

Everyone says that, C-Bol. Everyone kicks off at me for it! Work, mates, pub chats...everything.

I genuinely - and have said this before on here – think there may be something wrong in me head because everyone else keeps telling me with aghast and aplomb that it’s one of the greatest movies ever made. I genuinely was more entertained by Oscar.

I’ve tried, I really have, and have watched it a few times and just got angrier with myself one each subsequent viewing.

It’s spiritual sequel, Casino, was magnificent. And I always get “Well, if you fucking like Casino, you must like Goodfellas...” but I don’t. I don’t and I can’t.

Yet I love Hudson Hawk...

The final third is just absolutely terrible, it completely ignores subplots and leaves a couple of characters' fates up in the air. It feels like a studio's had at it, really. Overall though, I think it's just about worth a look but I'd wait for it to get to Netflix or something.

Really excited about Brawl in Cell Block 99. It's only getting a limited release so I'm hoping that we get it at my local. If Zahler can follows up Bone Tomahawk with something just as good then we've got a serious talent on our hands.

I’m the same about Blade Runner.  There is nothing about the film I should not like, but I think it’s fucking awful.  Gladiator makes me feel exactly the same.

There are some terrible people in this thread.

Anyway, I take back what I said about The Babysitter looking awful because it was anything but. Possibly the most surprisingly enjoyable film I've seen all year. Don't read anything about it, just stick it on and remember, if you like it, that it was directed by McG. Fucking McG!

He'll always get a pass for that First Charlie's Angels film and for getting butted by Bill Murray during the making of it

Brawl in Cell Block 99.

Vince Vaughn as bald hard nut battering people in prison, it works surprisingly well and harks back to 80's exploitation flicks. It's longer than it should be, the first half is pretty unnecessary and has this weird emotionless tone to it but it's worth catching if you want a decent meatheaded movie.

I loved it. Well, as much as you can love something like that. I thought the drawn out first act made the rest of the film all the better. It's a film driven by the central characters performance as much ad the plot which is a bit ropey. Very similar in tone and style to Bone Tomahawk without the ensemble element. This director looks like he has a serious talent for dragging great performances from actors. Vaughan is very good in it.

Watched Groundhog Day for probably the first time in about 20-25 years with the other half last night. Had my movie analysing hat on thinking it's either a really difficult movie to make as they have to try and reset everything so precisely to maintain the deja vu, or how easy it may be to make because of the amount of stock footage alternate takes they can use for some sequences. I liked some of the subtleties like using a different camera angle when certain events play out differently because of the different approaches Bill Murray has to that particular time in the situation. Bill Murray absolutely kills it. He's so good at portraying that whole asshole that sees the light type character. Well, he's good at everything he puts his hand to. My significant other watched it as well, and I think she enjoyed it because sometimes she'll get up and go for a smoke a couple of times during a movie, but she went the distance with it. She appreciated that it wasn't the most taxing of films as well. I really should give Lost In Translation a proper crack of the whip again.

"That guy from that thing" Stephen Tobolowsky is good as well, and the late Harold Ramis is in it, as well as being writer/director. If only Dan Ackroyd would have turned up as well.
