Mr_Danger
I watched it on Showbox but i imagine it's up on all the usual sites too. Noticed American Made has gone up too as well as Wind River.Ā
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted October 15, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted October 15, 2017 Yeah, found it now. See if I can resist watching it until I find out if it's on anywhere local this Friday.
Keith Houchen
Wonder Woman. Didn't like it, too long for a start and very silly. Dawn from the office pops up in the Simon Pegg role, so that was nice.Ā
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted October 15, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted October 15, 2017 I've watched Brawl in Cell Block 99 twice now. It's just fucking savage! A vicious assault on the senses... I didn't like the ending thoughĀ
Paid Members Thunderplex Posted October 15, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted October 15, 2017 Finally watched Spy last night. Ā Not bad apart from two things, way too long and could do with losing a good 30 minutes, and I find Melissa McCarthy extremely dislikeable. Ā I canāt remember a film where I have actually enjoyed her performance, or liked the character she portrays, which aĀ for a leading lady is not a good thing. Also saw the Babysitter. Ā Canāt say too much due to spoilers, but possibly one of the best teenage slashers I have seen. Ā Watch and enjoy.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted October 16, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted October 16, 2017 Sorry to upset @LokiĀ because I know Richard Stanley's his buddy and all that but I just watched Hardware and it's one of the biggest piles of shite I've watched for ages. I normally love the whole dystopia / post-apocalypse thing but not this time. But I did rewatch Se7en last night and that film is one of the few where I think it actually improves once you've seen it and know the twist / ending in advance. It's still easily David Fincher's best film, it's amazing that anyone disagrees or would suggest that Gone Girl, which is shite, is better. Paid Members Au Posted October 16, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted October 16, 2017 The thread's moved on but I just feel like supporting Malbranque in that I also loveĀ Casino but I'm pretty indifferentĀ to Goodfellas.Ā The chicken strips episode of Community that plays on Goodfellas is excellent though and wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the film so there's that at least. Rosamund isn't in Se7en though.Ā I watched it too, it was on Sony Movies I think, and yes it improves even more with the knowledge of the end. Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted October 17, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted October 17, 2017 Seven is a masterpiece. I've said it on here before, but that shot , the birds eye view from the helicopter, when Mills is walking off after shooting John Doe, and Somerset is just standing there is probably my favourite moment in any movie ever. It absolutely haunted me in the flicks when I saw it first and every time I think of that moment, I get goosebumps. And I maintain that Fincher, or the studio - whoever - should have ended it on that shot. Fade to black...credits. I even bought the Graphic Novel, the movie novelization and the BFI Film Class book off the strength of that flick. A masterclass. Can't stress that enough and one that gets better with each viewing. When I saw it in the flicks, I took a load of the free movie magazines out of the Savoy in Dublin went home and made a Video cover for it because we had a van man who'd come around the estate selling out of date cans of Cherry Coke, Flinstones t-shirts and pirated videos, and I made the cover in anticipation of getting a copy off him. He never had it. He just had Biodome and Mary Reilly.
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted October 17, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted October 17, 2017 My favourite shot is when John DoeĀ appears at the end of that hallway. I remember when I first saw it and I thought, "FUCK. Is that him?" Amazing scene, that whole chase.
DJM
I watched the new ChuckyĀ and Texas Chainsaw films over the weekend. Cult of Chucky is a good sequel in the Child's Play series, and like Curse of Chucky has a more serious style like the first two films, ratherĀ than the comedy approach in BrideĀ (which IĀ still liked andĀ is aĀ fun film)Ā and Seed (which while not awful, the less said about it the better). Leatherface isĀ a different approach to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it ends up being a disappointing and unnecessary prequel to the original 1973 film, that tries to explain the background of Leatherface but for the most part does not really have the feel of a TCM film (the first 10-minutes and the last 10-minutes feel like TCM, but the rest not so much). The directing is fine from Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury (who made Inside which I think is a great little horror film), as is the acting from a pretty good cast (including Stephen Dorff, Finn Jones, Lili Taylor and young Hodor from Game of Thrones), and it has the expected blood, gore and the nasty deaths, but there is little of interest in the film really, it has a lackluster and predictable attempt at making you guess who from the group of people becomes Leatherface, and if we are honest no one really wanted to know how Leatherface became Leatherface (and even if we did, this film does not do a very good job of showing us; the Leatherface at the end of the film does not really feel like the same Leatherface we will end up seeing in the 1973 TCM). It's better than TCM III, TCM Next Generation and the Texas Chainsaw film from 2013, butĀ the original two films and the two films from 2003 andĀ 2006 are much better. WyattSheepMask
So is Leatherface an origin story then? Because I thought they did that already in that 2006 film (TCM:The Beginning I think it was called). Unless this is an attempted reboot and they're just going to ignore that previous one

I agree with all this, the turn for the serious has been an enjoyable surprise. 2, 3, Bride and Curse are some of the best horror sequels you will find. It's a superb horror franchise. Leatherface is a prequel to the 1973 original. The 2013 Texas Chainsaw 3D is a sequel to the 1973 original, ignoring anything that was made after it (TCM2, TCM III and Next Generation).
