A few that I've listened to recently(ish) and enjoyed:

Dear Joan and Jericha

Julia Davis and Vicki Pepperdine playing two very middle class agony aunts who each episode give advice to "listeners" problems who have written in. They're basically Mumsnet personified. It's hilarious and I'm still not sure how much of it is scripted and how much is improvised. God knows how they don't burst out laughing while riffing off each other. I love the description too

Quote

Everywomen Joan Damry and Jericha Domain have between them worked in the fields of life coaching, female sexual health, psycho-genital counselling and sports journalism for the past 32 years. Joan has been married several times and has five children, while Jericha has been married for 30 years and has an only daughter, Cardinal. Joan recently turned her hand to erotic-romantic adult fiction, whilst Jericha has written 5 books on depression.

The Butterfly Effect with Jon Ronson

Journalist Jon Ronson investigates the effect that the creation and rise of PornHub had on the world of pornography and the people in it and who use it. It's pretty fascinating with each episode focusing on a different aspect of how the website had a knock on effect. Great little side story too about a Norwegian stamp collector.

He's recently just made a new podcast called Last Days of August about the pornstar August Ames who committed suicide after being publicly shamed on Twitter for refusing to work with a male co-star who had previously made gay porn. I'm only half way through it but enjoying it so far. He handles the interviews pretty well as he has knowledge on social media shaming due to his book he wrote a few years back on it. It's an Audible exclusive at the minute but will apparently be released on all platforms in April.

Dirty John

One of them investigative podcasts that are ten a penny these days but I'd say this one is up there with the best. They've recently made it into a TV show staring Eric Bana and I think it's just been put up on Netflix but I heard it's dog shit so listen to the podcast instead.

It's about a divorced, middle-aged woman who starts going out with this doctor she met online but when her grown up kids start noticing a lot of stuff about him that just doesn't add up, they start looking into who this guy is and start to untangle a web of crazy shit.

Broken Harts is good if you like true crime and the unraveling of public facades, in the same vein as Dirty John. Despite being a true crime junkie, I'd never heard of this before: a white lesbian couple adopt 6 black kids and end up driving them off a cliff in a murder-suicide. It's very sad, of course, but enthralling for its exploration of how the image presented publicly on social media can be very much at odds with the reality.

I'm currently listening to Monster: The Zodiac Killer, which isn't telling me anything I didn't already know, but it's got some new interviews and thankfully doesn't swallow the Robert Graysmith bunkum. It's made me consider that the Zodiac had more in common with the Unabomber than Ted Bundy, though.

Someone recommended Behind the Bastards, and while I liked the episodes on Alex Jones, I've found recent ones pretty terrible, whatever serious points being made about the bastard in question are waylaid by lame attempts at comedy and wild speculation. OMG Mark Zuckerberg can't grow a beard! Cue much shrieking and guffawing.

The best new podcast I've got into recently is probably David Tennant's. It can get a bit luvvie with two actors having a chat, but high quality of guests so far - Olivia Colman, Whoopi Goldberg, Jodie Whittaker and Ian McKellen.

I tried Ron Burgundy's podcast but it was shit so I deleted it.

I've stumbled on Bottom of the Stream where two English guys review awful obscure Netflix movies. Very laid back and well worth a listen.

That sounds right up my street, cheers!

Ive been listening to It Could Happen Here which is by the same team that produced Behind The Bastards and focuses on how a second American civil war could take place. Really decent.

Also Blockbuster which tells the well trodden story of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. It’s a mix of documentary and radio drama and whilst it can be a bit cheesy, it’s a really easy listen.

It's probably been mentioned in the Metal thread but I'm really getting into Immerzbox, it's the lesser known and not panned by Merzbow himself Merzbow podcast following all 50 CD's in the Merzbox. They manage to keep it balanced and not be either pretentious or too cute and taking the piss, there's next to no actual music played and when there is the volume is low and won't just shatter your ears which I appreciate as sudden cuts to static and banging would be a right pain.

There's enough there for a non-listener and those who just want to hear about weird and wonderful instruments.

Very much enjoyed Gossipmongers, which I thought I'd seen recommended on here but I can't see any evidence for it. It's Joe Wilkinson, David Earl (AKA Brian Gittens) and Poppy Hillstead reading out gossip they've been sent by listeners. It tends to be "there was a bloke at our school who brought his mum's dildo round his mates to sniff" type gossip rather than celebrity stuff, but it is very very funny.

There are only 6 episodes so far though, and they're already on a break apparently. When you get into an American podcast you do so safe in the knowledge that will have done one every week for 6 years, not even missing Christmas. UK podcasts tend to be done after about 12 eps and they they go on massive breaks. Dear Joan and Jericha which was mention above hasn't had a new ep since 2018, the greatest Podcast of all time The Thomas and Way Podcast was ridiculously sporadic and last ep was 2015.

Sequelisers is back for season 4. Ashens is gone now as he's making another film, which I know leaves the door open for a return at some point, but they've changed the format to be a lot more collaborative. It's still fixing bad sequels to good movies, but less competitive. This week they do The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

I listened to all of this in a week. Cheesy as fuck but good storytelling.

I get the feeling this is going to be everywhere very soon but 13 Minutes To The Moon will win all the podcast awards. It's the story of the 1969 moon landing. Despite having the most spoiled ending of any story, it's edge of the seat stuff. Listen to it now so you can be the cool kid when everyone else is raving about it.
