I have a subscription to Edge magazine, but where I used to read it from cover to cover nowadays I really just skim it.

And I get Private Eye every two weeks.

Aww, what? Come ON. This is fascinating.

I would get RG, but its almost impossible to get in Preston. Ive had this out with Darran, the editor of the mag before now, because you cannot get it anywhere here regularly, and the one place that did have it on a regular basis, Forbuoys, near the Hospital has closed down, and been taken over by Booth's who have extended their supermarket into the old shop space.

I subscribed to the original RG, and have issue 1 and the disc kicking around somewhere, and got some free issues of the new mag when the original company went bust. Now, however, its lack of availability is annoying. I cant afford to subscribe again. which makes it extremely hard to give two hoots. Plus there isn't always stuff that appeals, some of the 'linked' stuff as in we will talk about this old game because this new game is out this month, is annoying as is the Future Classic's thing which just seems to be, these are our favourite games, so they are bound to be amazing :(

Empire subscriber since I dunno 1996/7. Im guessing its struggling at the moment as is a shadow of its former self and the limited edition subs covers, which are usually just covers without text on arent really a saving grace. I still read it to keep up with what's happening in the world, and enjoy the Video Dungeon, Classic films, Classic Scene but the reviews have taken on a 'Shite and Sound' wankery about them trying to be something more highbrow, when it isnt and never was. If the upmarket thing works for them, then great, its dull as dishwater as it stands though and the pandering to Peter Jackson and Spielberg, is beginning to irk a little as well.

Sound like a right grump this morning, its probably the hangover kicking in.. Soz

Have you actually read Sight & Sound? Because if you did you would know that the reviews are NOTHING like that in the slightest. They haven't changed in the whole time that I've been reading it, in fact.

Empire's problem these days is that they are far too much about comic book films and they seem to labour under the impression that all of their readers know and / or give a shit about what goes on in these comic books.

As for not being able to get Retro Gamer in Preston, there are about three different shops that do it in fucking Redhill, so clearly you're not trying very hard!

Yeah, I read Shite and Sound alot at uni, mainly for source material and further reading on films and the reviews IMO are starting to go the same way. The reviews have changed to try and be more cerebral. They never used to be like that.

I'll agree with a certain extent about the Superhero stuff, mind

As for trying to get RG.. Two WHSmith's, Town and Deepdale rarely have it, Sainsburies and Asda rarely have it, my local shop used to stock it, but don't any more Border's had it when it was open, but of course that's been gone a while and so on. Its to do with distribution issues, RG has a low pick up on non subscribing buyers, Preston isn't that important in terms of sales and they have had loads sent back, when it has been available, as a result, it isn't a priority and they are concentrating on areas where it sells more. Which is fair enough. Thus its difficult to get up here.

i go through a lot of magazines per month. i always buy fhm and loaded and used to buy maxim and front. footie mag wise i buy the evertonian every couple of months and used to buy fourfourtwo religiously but have only bought one issue in like 8 months. stopped reading total film but still buy empire now and again, especially if it comes in a twin pack with fhm or q

The thing that bothers me when it comes to Loaded, Front and the like is that they are just 'new month, same shit' magazines. Like Nuts or Zoo, just not as bad. I'll pick up those types of magazines once in a while as when you've not read them in six months or so, they're fresh and enjoyable. I was really looking for a magazine I could follow monthly.

I don't usually finish the Sunday Times until Tuesday as Sundays are my busiest day at work at this time of year so I can only read a few pages at a time when I get chance, and it's nice to have a glossy magazine to look forward to each month.

Cheers for the replies anyway, lads.

The only mags i still get all the time are Private Eye and Viz.

I used to buy Retro Gamer all the time but like patdfb i found it harder and harder to get ahold of and eventually i just gave up on it. I used to buy Powerslam every month as well but stopped buying that a while ago for many of the reasons already discussed in the "Fin Martin needs to grow the fuck up and stop acting like a prick" thread* now i tend to flick through it when i'm in WHSmiths buying Private Eye or i'll read my mates copy of it cos he still buys every issue even though he thinks the same of Fin as almost everyone else on here.

Bizzare is another one i used to buy all the time when i was around 17/18 and i stopped buying it after about a year just because it got to the point where it felt like 90% of the mag was just adverts for wank lines and shite mobile porn subscription services.

*Not the actual thread title but i can't be arsed to look for what it's actually called

Sight & Sound can fuck off. I stopped reading it because they always gave away the endings to films.

Even though it was a gift for someone else, i actually have a subscription to Glamour Magazine... that cool.

I used to read sidewalk (skate mag) when i was younger, as well as sound on sound (music production mag), but can't be arsed with either anymore and would rather spend my lunch money on lunch.

Viz is still always a good laugh and from what i have read of it, i do also really like Retro Gamer.

I only tend to read magazines if I'm at a train station and don't have a decent book on me. I remember in the not too distant past having to wait for exclusives on movies / games to come from magazines. Crazy to think of there being information in the world now that could come out in print before it was available on the internet.
