I GENUINELY view this forum as one of the more nuanced you'll find online so, whilst people can be completely open to say HAHA RIP RACIST CUNT to him, others should be absolutely open to comment on what the character and personality of Hulk Hogan meant as opposed to Terry the racist tosser.

If not, then when Austin carks it, I look forward to him being routinely referred to as a racist and multiple spousal abuser as much as it was great that time he stunned Vince or whatever. Ozzy Osborne died and we were all gutted, but nobody brought up him being pro Israel or being anti trade unionist cunt, or a spousal or animal abuser.

Like everyone has said, despite his recent behaviour, he was a childhood hero and those are memories that stay with you. More makes ya sad for an era/childhood gone as opposed to caring about the person as much anymore. 
 

A lot of hate for him on Twitter and people being pleased. Totally get why people hate a racist, but always found it odd that people like Lawler, Flair, Michael’s and even Austin have some checkered pasts/rumours regarding behaviour to women, yet still get cheered and praised. But then wrestling never makes sense fully. 

It’s a comfort though to know that somewhere in the world right now, a black baby is being born with the soul of Hulk Hogan.

 

I think Michaels is a bit of a prick but he at least admits he was a massive prick and not a good person in the 90s. Lawler is only liked by pervy creepy bastards, the only thing that keeps him from being more hated is that lots of wrestling fans don't know who he is or barely saw him wrestle. I think Flair is pretty much disliked too, but seen more as a tragic comedy character and people laugh at him rather than hate him. 

I kind of expect wrestlers to be massive right wingers, but most aren't as vocal as Hogan. He's outdone by the McMahon/Levesque family but who isn't? He's earnt his bad reputation. 

 

There aren't many wrestling "legends" that I'd genuinely be upset if they died. Probably Sting and Bret.

It probably speaks volumes about his chaotic private life that my first thought upon reading the initial reports were "oh this is more Bubba the Love Sponge bullshit".

When I saw the WWE tweet it hit home, and honestly my first thought was just sadness. Sadness about how the greatest career in wrestling had disintegrated to him being booed in his last WWE appearance, how his family unit has been ripped apart and his death being subject to joy and ridicule by a large chunk of your wrestling Twitterati.

But it only hit me at all because of what Hulk Hogan meant to me, and clearly residually, still does.

I've found a lot of the reaction today to be largely dependent on age and when you were a fan, but quite simply I wouldn't have become a wrestling fan were it not for Hulk Hogan. Hulk was the man. He was on everything to a degree that even Steve Austin wouldn't match in the 90's (despite a good bloody go).

Clearly Terry Bollea the man was problematic. His usually humourous and sometimes problematic tall tales were beyond even what you'd expect from a jock who spent 25 years hammering cocaine and steroids and having his brain battered 300 times a year.

He clearly also held racist views and was caught on tape making comments that couldn't be construed not to be. 

But forgive me if I'm not shocked that a probably rather thick bloke from Florida who grew up during the late 60's and early 70's held personal views that I wouldn't agree with and would consider distasteful.

And I'd hazard that these particular comments were probably tame compared to anything we'd have heard in any WWF dressing room during the 1980's.

On the flipside, even Bret Hart (hardly Hogan's greatest fan) has gone on record (as have dozens of others) on how great he was with Make a Wish kids etc, usually going well beyond the call of duty.

And while his mantra wasn't backed up by his personal actions, I'd like to think that they had some sort of positive impact on millions upon millions of children growing up in the 1980's or 1990s.

Due to his sheer celebrity he was and will always be held under the microscope to a degree that his contemporaries probably managed to escape.
"Universally beloved" Andre the Giant was well-known to have spouted racist comments, confident no-one would do anything about it, for instance.

A deeply complicated man and figure, but worthy of a more nuanced look than "RIP you racist scum" imo.

Today there are millions of 40-50 year olds who, deep inside their younger selves, are more than a little sad today.

A massive cultural icon. Everyone knows Hulk Hogan. My 90 year Grandma had heard of only two pro wrestlers - Big Daddy and Hulk Hogan.

Terry Bollea may be gone but Hulkamania will never die, brother.

I’m surprised by how little this has shocked me. I’m not sure if any wrestler death from that era could surprise me, which is a little bit grim. 

A cultural icon for sure; but he tarnished his own legacy, sadly. If nothing else, I hope others learned from the mistakes he made and became better people as a result.
