I tried to be too pithy, didn't work. So now a ramble...

When we have a choice preferences are brilliant obviously, especially preferences towards things you're likely going to enjoy. Sign posts on a road to having a fullfilling life and all that. My issue was twofold.

Firstly, we don't always have a choice. The person who loves christmas music gets a much better supermarket experience in december. I'm not saying you force yourself to like things but still the person who's liking it will have more joy in that 30 minutes than the person who doesn't. On top of that the person who defines part of their identity as hating christmas music is actively gonna have a shit time. I just don't really think about things I don't like (yes, i'm in the wrong thread)

I find football fundementally dull. My friends do not and thus I am going to experience football sometimes. I'm missing out there. There are times they are having more joy at the pub than I am. I can't do anything about it but i don't exactly make it a big thing about me, cos why focus on what is not? I'm not sad that I can't watch it at home, there is more than enough TV and film that I love but I can't help but feel i'm missing out when the world cup rolls around.

Secondly it's the pride with which people spout these big sweeping statements about what they don't like. My issue is not with opinions it's with focusing on the negative ones (yes I'm in the wrong thread). Passion and excitement is fucking brilliant, I love talking to passionate people even if they're passionate about stuff I have no interest in. People who make a big deal out of what they don't like, dull. As I said, you're focusing on what you're missing out on rather than what's bringing you joy.

Also, to be clear rejection is not an indication of higher sensibilities. I have way more intellectual respect for someone who wants to talk about how great Georges Perec is rather than someone who bangs on about how Dan Brown books are facile despite agreeing with both those statements.

Thirdly (fuck) there probably is something you might enjoy in many of these sweepingly discounted genres but you won't find it you treat your opinons as some sort of rigid code. Again, not saying you need to dig through shit but there are times you find yourself there anyways... If someone in my life wants me to watch something they love that I don't think is for me I'm still giving it a chance. Sure, you might generally dislike blockbusters or foreign films or electronic music or rock music or WWE or AEW but these are big sweeping genres that encompass quite a lot of variation. I've found life changing works in places I didn't expect to and it's great!

That is what you were saying there, I'm not arguing with you. My argument is with statements like the original (obviously an attempt to troll but indicative of something a lot of people do)

I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm totally against all aspects of AI being used to diminish opportunities in creative industries, but in this instance, just look what it's up against.
