Apparently popes had been exclusively Italian for about 600 years before JP2, and Francis was the first South American, so I'm guessing that's progress.

But you're on a hiding to nothing in expecting one of the world's most conservative institutions to do anything particularly groundbreaking. Hell, Francis was considered progressive, and all he was really doing was catching up - and even then he had to restrain himself on certain things to avoid a revolt.

Virginia Giuffre is dead at 41 by suicide. Awful thing to see.

I noticed that she’d died, but I remember news reports recently that she’d had a car accident and only had a few days to live, so I thought  it was through this.  Very sad.

Mike Peters from The Alarm aged 66 following a long battle with cancer.

Throughout his fight he continued to tour and record.

A huge loss to the music scene.

Saw him front Big Country in 2012 on their Crossing Anniversary tour and he was a great stand in frontman. He's had a few battles with it and yeah, kept getting back on the horse. Seemed a top person.

I have a real soft spot for The Alarm, as my Dad is a big fan of theirs. We saw Mike Peters supporting Bob Geldof in 2003, and he was fantastic.

Jill Sobule, best known for her 90s hit I Kissed a Girl, has died in a house fire at the age of 66. 

I first heard of Sobule because of the Clueless soundtrack, which contains the cracking Supermodel. I grew to appreciate her more listening to Warren Zevon bootlegs, as she was his support act for a while during the 90s. I'm not going to claim to be a huge fan or anything, but she was obviously very talented and wrote some really fun pop songs. 

Sobule was also quite ground-breaking, as I think I Kissed a Girl might be one of the first really popular songs to openly deal with gay themes. 

RIP.

Sadly Synthwave artist Starcadian has died in a collision whilst riding a E-bike.

I saw him perform once at Retro Future Festival 3 and it was an absolute banger. 

His music is super funky and I don't usually go for that autotuned style singing but he was so damn catchy and he always had a tremendous groove. 

I highly recommend checking out his music videos and albums. Particularly the immense video for Freak Night. He will be missed.
