Film director James Foley at 71. 

Best known as the director of Glengarry Glen Ross and, in more recent years, a couple of the Fifty Shades films. I really like At Close Range and After Dark, My Sweet (which he also co-wrote). Both of those are well worth watching, for anyone who hasn't seen them. He wasn't exactly an auteur or anything, but those are a couple of really good films with distinct styles.

Absolutely agreed. He'll understandably be remembered for Glengarry Glen Ross, which is in with a shout of being the most significant American film of the 90s. But At Close Range is incredibly good and After Dark, My Sweet might be the very best of that great run of neo-noirs we got in the 90s.

They're the two that provide the best evidence he could have had more than a journeyman career (which wasn't bad by any means) had things gone differently. At Close Range, in particular, is so stylish and atmospheric from what I remember. I reckon it's due a re-watch.

At Close Range has one of my favourite line deliveries. Me and a mate always used to say it to each other to crack the other up. It's one of Christopher Walken's character's associates dressing him down after he's had enough of him, and he goes "You got the soul of a pig. Soo-eee... soo-eee... soo-eee" He says it so calmly, it joyous.

Pioneering Hispanic country music singer Johnny Rodriguez at 73. He made some beautiful music in his time. RIP.

Brian Glanville the greatest football writer of his (or any other in my opinion) generation aged 93.

The actor Joe Don Baker a few days back.  He played both a villain up against Timothy Dalton's Bond in "The Living Daylights" and then, as a different character, a sidekick to Brosnan.

I always felt he was an underrated Bond villain. Of course he came back as a different character for the Brosnan films but General Whittaker was quality.

Superb performance in Charley Varrick as well. Also, his over confident PI in Cape Fear where he underestimated Max Cady would not end well for him.

Yeah, good dependable "Oh, look! It's him" kind of actor.

Tended to lift whatever scene he was in.

Absolute legend. One of the most memorable comedy roles for me. That whole cast was just incredible. Still love watching to this day.
