Merzbow Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Goldberg was booked just as badly, should have been the hottest guy in the biz but he was slumming it in the midcard as soon as he was champ. Had a couple of PPV matches, one against a by that time almost worthless Curt Hennig and wasn't even in a match at Fall Brawl or World War 3. Quote

In regards to missing PPV'S, Jericho's first book says how Goldberg's new contract meant he only wrestled on a certain amount of PPV'S, great idea for someone whose entire push was built on a winning streak Can't argue with the point about wrestling on the midcard, though at least he wasn't the fourth most important thing about a Hogan Savage feud like Sting was while champion Quote

They’d already announced Hennig & The Giant vs Billbo & Kevin Greene for the PPV and had the Georgia Dome on the horizon for Nitro. Tickets were already moving rapido off the back of advertising Hogan vs Goldberg non title* which was due to be a dark main after the show, when at some point they decided “fuck it, we’ll do it for the title” to put some more butts in the seats (and announce it on Thunder with just four days to spare). Of course they also decided Goldy could be their new meal ticket and switched the title, then in the days before the PPV separated the tag into Baldilocks vs Hennig and Greene vs Giant… which I guess made sense because Billy boy and Mr Perfect had been the add ons to existing enmity between Kev and Giant. The rumour mill at the time proposed that Goldberg vs Giant for the title was being preserved for Road Wild instead of being thrown away at the Bash last minute dot com, which makes sense, and would have made infinitely more sense than what actually happened in Sturgis. The whole “Goldberg only works one on one off for PPVs” deal fucking baffled me. It’s not like they were on the road all week every week at the time, he had plenty of off days ; EVERYONE did. He probably would have had anything between 2 and 4 Sundays a month anyway but they decided to give him the contractual right to have off the most lucrative one of the month 50% of the year. Regarding Fall Brawl, it’s one of the best examples you could imagine of how the priority was to try and recover ground on Monday nights rather than deliver a satisfying PPV product ; with the exception of Saturn vs Raven the show was dogshit and with Winston-Salem clearly expecting the return of Ric Flair, they saved that for the next night on Nitro and, apropos to the topic, threw away the first Baldberg vs Sting match, for the title, for free. WCW man, what a shitshow. * I say this, and it’s how I remember it, but it wouldn’t shock me if the plan was non title but they neglected to advertise it as such so the Georgians would come expecting to see a title match only to have the rug yanked out on the night. Incredibly unlikely. Verde Gagne and Larry Hennig were already former pupils which was some legacy already! Quote

Chico Torres Posted August 5 Posted August 5 The WWE Vault summer intern has a lot to answer for… Moving on, they have posted a great Texas brawl between Bruiser Brody and Abdullah the Butcher, two of the all time great monsters Also on the WCW channel they just posted the infamous Steiners vs Harlem Heat match from Road Wild where our Stevie and Booker got tons of heat not because they were particularly proficient at being heels but because there is a high correlation between racists and attendees of a biker rally in South Dakota. The same genius bookers also gave this crowd a 30 minute technical borefest between Benoit and Malenko. Quote

I remember enjoying their match at Summerslam 2007. Think it might be the only good one. The I Quit match at Breaking Point in 2009 got rave reviews at the time but I thought it was a slog. Quote
