I can't stand Cena or Orton yet still had quite a lot of fun with their 2009 feud. Their Iron Man in particular surprised me with how good it was. I've not watched it back since so apologies if it's actually awful.

It was everytime they ran it back later that I thought was dogshit, especially their 2013 Unification bollocks when the crowd was desperate for Bryan to get a title run and instead had to sit through those pair trading wins.

Also on the WCW channel they just posted the infamous Steiners vs Harlem Heat match from Road Wild where our Stevie and Booker got tons of heat not because they were particularly proficient at being heels but because there is a high correlation between racists and attendees of a biker rally in South Dakota. The same genius bookers also gave this crowd a 30 minute technical borefest between Benoit and Malenko.

I don’t think there’s much you could’ve put in front of that crowd that would get a great reaction but, yeah, it’s WCW all over that they didn’t think ahead of time about the kind of racist riff raff that would be attending and casually threw Booker and Stevie out there in a pretty lengthy match. The show was free to attend as well wasn’t it? So you literally got any old cunt rocking up. Crowd was full of drunk racists who don’t even like wrestling. It was all just a jolly for Bischoff and an excuse for him and his bike shagger mates to get their leathers on. No wonder Heenan got shit faced at the commentary table just to get through it.

I vividly remember catching the show on delay on DSF and at the time, despite the show being pretty shit, I lapped it up. I do love an outdoor wrestling show just for the aesthetics of it and I don’t think I even noticed how twatty the crowd were. Probably got drowned out by the German lads on the DSF commentary. Looking back at the card though, it looks fairly strong on paper and it was the first PPV after the NWO was properly formed, but not much of it delivered in reality. The Rey vs Dragon opener was probably the highlight for me. Even Flair vs Eddie was way inferior to a couple of their Nitro matches around that time.

Definitely agree that I love a show in a proper outdoor setting, Bash at the Beach 1995 was great, where else would you get to see Meng at the seaside (and Machi vs Flair was great).

Here’s another lesser known WCW outdoor show, an episode of Saturday Night from 1995 filmed in Charlotte city centre (no idea why). It started raining at some point. Here’s our Ray in action

Hogan vs. Quake, April 1990. An absolute 101 example of a Hogan match. Great work from both, and from Jimmy Hart whose shitstirring with the megaphone is clear as a bell.

On the "How old?" front, this looks like a battle of two 50 year old blokes. Hogan is 36. Quake is 26.

New upload from the dying days of Russo written TV. Jeremy Borash joins on comms.

Oh that Russo version of his interpretation of WarGames is hideous. Again another example of putting New or 2000 next to an existing thing in wrestling will always suck.

How much did that cage cost to make and was it something they could really afford at that point? I'll answer the second one: no.

It was made for the Ready to Rumble movie so constructed at some point in summer 1999 so just as things were beginning to fall out of their arse a bit, but not 2000 levels or absolutely fucked. I'm sure it wasn't a Blue Peter job though and cost a few quid.

I agree. Growing up I always thought WCW was a shoddy pale imitation of my beloved WWF but when I saw pics of Wargames 2000 in some magazine or other, it was the first time I ever felt that 'damn, I wish I was watching that promotion' ping of jealousy.

I can't imagine it was that dear to make, it's just a slightly bigger than normal cage with a slightly smaller than normal cage on top then a pointless little cage on top of that

Other than the Mike Awesome/Kanyon spot did they ever really make any use of the size of it?

The show is dogshit, everyone is all over the place and you'd be forgiven for thinking, given everyone mentions him and he's in every second segment, that Vince Russo is the biggest star in the promotion. But in the middle of it, there's Bill Goldberg still looking like a million dollars. They feed him 6 guys, which is normally a crime but here, no-one is worth a dribble of piss anyway, and he looks fucking great. Every look and mannerism is that of a star and the spot where he just drops Sanders and hits a spear in one single movement would be the most memorable spot in some entire years but is lost completely amongst the 300 individual segments on these shows.

That Vince Russo didn't just put the title back on Goldberg ASAP and build the entire promotion around him in 1999 shows what a ridiculously stupid human being he is. Fancy fucking about trying to make Jeff Jarrett a star when you've got Bill Goldberg at the peak of his powers. Fucking idiot.

Aside, if you ever wonder why Tony Skiavone lost all credibility, listen to him have to say every fan is desperate to see Kronik fight the Harris Boys.

Any excuse to post this again:

Possibly the final bit of WCW business that - if watched in a vacuum - would make you think this was a hot company. The DNA of Goldberg/Brock at WrestleMania 33 is sequenced here more or less in its entirely. Just two guys mauling each other for 15 minutes with the crowd eating every bit of it up.

You're right, Russo was certifiably insane to not just build the entire company around Goldberg. Three years into a run is nothing today. Crazy how it could seem like a lifetime back then.

I was thinking this recently with the whole "Seth screwed Roman 14 years ago" stuff at SummerSlam.

I put it into perspective in my head by going "That's like WWF in 2000 referencing an angle from WrestleMania 2 with the same wrestlers" - only, they couldn't have done that as there were no wrestlers feuding in 2000 WWF that were even working there in 1986.

The difference between 1986 WWF and 2000 WWF is night and day - the fact current WWE is using that same timeframe for one of their top matches at SummerSlam is bonkers.

Sorry, tangent, but it really did blag my head. As The Gaffer said, three years felt like an eternity then. 14 years is unthinkable.
