Chico Torres Posted June 27 Posted June 27 Great little comp here, Sting and various tag team partners, and thankfully mainly before the shite Crow Sting era. You know it’s a good one where the first thing you see of the epic heel super team of Big Van Vader and Big Barry Windham. Features Sting teaming with Hacksaw against the legendary Stud Stable team of Double A and Bunkhouse Buck, with Macho Man against the fantastic fat boy team of Avalanche and Bubba, with Lex against the Faces of Fear, the great period where Lex is a disingenuous good guy when Sting is looking but he actually hates the fans…and more! Sadly the Vault guy has lost the plot lately with multiple Kane content, Triple H vs Randy Orton but I’ll keep the faith that he will surprise us with a Best of Power & Glory rarities comp or something. Chico Torres Posted July 3 Posted July 3 This is honestly one of the best comps they have made, don’t sneer at two and a half hours of Hacksaw in the (hopefully) post-smark era we are in now. Used to hear “he was good in Mid South but shit in WWF” but this shows what nonsense that is, a super over guy who has great punches is anything but shit. Starts off with two of the greatest matches ever including what I think is a greatest match ever candidate brawling with Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer, and also has great (yes great) WWF matches with Harley Race, Macho King (amazing match), Slaughter, Shawn Michaels, Andre, Rude and others. As well as the great WCW match with Vader. Ignore conventional wisdom and as our Jake used to say, trust me Quote
SoloJones Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Excited to give that Duggan comp a watch, saw a WWE match of his vs Andre (not sure if its the same match as the one here) that was absolutely fantastic. There's a Sunday Night Heat match from 2007 against Regal which isn't on this comp, but is well worth checking out, and is a bit of a hidden gem as it aired when Heat was a WWE.com exclusive. Quote

Chili Posted July 3 Posted July 3 (edited) Duggan was far less than stellar in the WWF, sorry @Chico Torres but it has some heavy truth. But fair play to him because it probably put less damage on his body and prolonged his career. I think the comparison comes down to how incredibly good he actually is in Mid-South that it almost feels like you get robbed with his Fed work. But, there is a load of WWF matches mentioned that are very good. He seems to stop putting a shift in around 1990-1992 and then in his final few months before he left in August 1993, starts to work like he's got something to prove again, he has some really fun matches in that last few months he was around. He's a wrestler that absolutely gets his due in retrospect when you actually look at his work. His WCW run was fucking bollocks though, there's hardly anything to like about it other than his brilliant ability to be constantly over. He's absolutely delightful in general, and survived a load of health setbacks. I really enjoy those posts his wife made when they went travelling around the UK. I'd say he's in that Bobby Eaton category as one of the good ones. It's a credit to him that Hogan's yank shagging was a bit of a put off for me, yet when Duggan did it, I found it rather charming and likeable. He's a wrestler your dad likes. Banging theme tune too. Does make me appreciate the legend of Tracy Smothers just that it more, great work in this match. Oh and not forgetting the karate stand off. Yeah, Duggan was always one of the few wrestlers my Dad liked. Oddly, I remember when I went to see my first (and it turns out only) WWF show live, it was in December 93 at the NEC in Birmingham. And one of the vivid memories I have from that day is when we got to our seats, there was random music playing in the arena because the show hadn’t started yet. The usual ‘WrestleMania’ and ‘Slam Jam’ songs. For some reason they also played Duggan’s music despite him not only not being on the show, but he’d been gone from the WWF for months by that point. I clearly remember it though because my old man actually stood up thinking Hacksaw was gonna kick off the show. He never stood up for Savage, Undertaker or anyone else that night but for that brief moment when we thought Duggan was coming out, he was on his feet. To think Jim Herd didn’t wanna renew the Midnights contracts around that time. Or he at least lowballed them according to Cornette. They were killing it on all the PPVs and TVs back then. Maybe if they dressed as pizzas Herd would’ve seen something in them. Quote

Everything is pretty much perfect with the one minor exception that the Southern Boys confederacy outfits are a bit unfortunate. Cornette included too, he's a proper manager out there when you just focus on him and what he does. Quote
Chico Torres Posted July 3 Posted July 3 @Devon Malcolm Duggan and Michaels has matches on consecutive weeks in May 1993 on early episodes of Raw, the one on the is comp is the first one, the next week they had a return lumberjack match which was also great. @The King Of Swing the Vader match is the last match on this comp. @Chili he was great in his role, always over, awesome punches and as the comp shows he had a lot of great matches during his run. Dads of UKFFers are the best judges of wrestling. In WCW he did his job and got the crowds going on Worldwide and Pro, he actually had a lot of fun matches against Big Bubba on the C shows based around punches (from two great punchers) and when the geniuses turned Goldberg heel the used Hacksaw as a sympathetic babyface against him and he was very effective (I think he had just come back after recovering from cancer). One match I would have added is this great match against Yoko in 1993, still enough of a big deal that him being the first person to knock him off his feet and lived enough that him getting subsequently destroyed and bleeding really helped cement the big man as a main eventer. Chili Posted July 3 Posted July 3 (edited) Yeah that Yokozuna angle is class, the promo and angle where he wallops Andre and knocks him out just post Wrestlemania IV with the 2x4 is also brilliant. He's still sort of "Mid-South" Duggan until about mid 1988. I'll have to check out the comp when I have time, hopefully the MSG match with Macho King is on there, an absolute banger with amazing crowd heat. The King Duggan coronation is a great segment purely on the big grin on ol' Hacksaw's face. Also a great shot of the amazing and colourful babyface squad in 1989 there. Edited July 3 by Chili Quote

And my Dad was chuckling away at the post-match sight of Big Jim with a massive blob of snot on his face. This is most likely the moment and the reason my Dad became a fan of him.
