I had a couple when I went. The more fast food-y one was a lot better than the one that tried to be fancy because that was too heavy with really thick cuts of pork. Look at some reviews and find a place that's rated as doing a decent one!

(I don't think you'll get one outside of the Porto area though btw so depends on where in Portugal you are going if you will get the chance)

Flips has given a pretty good outline of pork floss on cake. Rancid, they also often put corn inside cakes too which is pretty awful and spoils some good cake. 

Pork floss is actually pretty good when it's in the right place like a Banh Mi or a giant crispy rice cake. 

With both of these things I'm not sure why they started some say it's a flavour contrast thing but I expect these were readily available ingredients in harder times when food needed some flavour, anything.

Even here, I've found that as soon as the Banh Mi gets "restaurantized" it's not the same. In 11 years here I've never had a great one in a sit down restaurant. They always try to be too clever. Its a bit like a pub chippy tea, never quite the same.  Leave it to guys on the street.

Looks like a trip to Leeds is required. The newish Vietnamese place on Church Gate in Leicester was a little underwhelming.

There's a decent Banh Mi place down in Forest Hill in south London. The bread wasn't French baguette, was definitely crispy and soft. I had had it like that once before at a place called Banh Mi Bay in Holborn, but I don't think that's around any more.

The place in Forest Hill was really good, though - the sandwich was packed, and delicious. Had it with a Vietnamese egg coffee, which I'd never tried before; unsurprisingly, I loved it (it has condensed milk in it, and I have a sweet tooth, so it's a forgone conclusion).

Breaded ham, mature cheddar, English mustard, sliced gherkins and German salami in a giraffe roll.

Looks wise, rubbish. Taste wise, 11/10

Pickled sliced red onions from Aldi are a welcome addition to the condiment family. 

I over did it this last weekend with bacon, cream cheese and chilli jam on toasted bagels. A fine breakfast sandwich but the chilli jam managed to give me heartburn for the first time in about 10 years. I refuse to learn my lesson though.

That sounds lovely. I've never had a chilli jam I've really enjoyed, but willing to give it another go. What do you recommend?

Cheese/cheese and ham toastie but it depends on your tolerance of sweet and savoury. I have it in the cheese board rotation and with pork pies too.

Ah, Asda’s finest or the Aldi equivalent is my go to but I’m sure there’ll be a fancy one with a bit of tablecloth tied around the lid in your fancy southern deli’s that would be worth a go.
