I was a skinny little fucker back in my early 20s. I had started doing freestyle wrestling and BJJ at the time and thought maybe it was a good idea to bulk up a bit.

At the time I knew absolutely fuck all about nutrition.

With that in mind, my solution was that I had a footlong Italian BMT from Subway every single day.

As a side bar, it took me quite a will to notice that BMT had nothing to do with the ingredients. I once asked the girl working there what it means and she went all bashful and said "Big Meaty Taste".

Glory days.

6” BMT with full salad, no jalapeños, oil and vinager, ranch and southwestern dressing on honey oat was my daily goto before Subway went shit.

Remember when they did Sub of the day which was a footlong for £1.99? I lived on that for a good two years in my first office job.

I think Wednesday was BMT and Friday was tuna.

It's wild how much better quality Subway seemingly was when it was cheaper, meatball marinara was always my go to. It was always risky adding too much to it, especially any extra sauces that'd make it taste even better but also fall apart and go everywhere if you weren't careful.

They do one in Thomas The Baker's which I started making myself at home which my wife loves and asks me to make for her regularly.

Ciabatta bread, thick cut ham, lettuce, cheese and a mango chutney mayo sauce. Really tasty stuff.

I have wanted to try a Francesinha ever since I first heard about them. A local delicacy of the city of Porto, this goliath of a sandwich consists of ham, steak and linguiça stashed between two slices of bread. That's then topped with layers of melted cheese and a special sauce made from beer, tomatoes and chillis. It's then often topped further with a runny fried egg.

Yes please!

Baguettes work if they're good quality, and you toast them in a sandwich press, I find.

Also, take some advice from the Horne Bros., and make this sandwich. It's so simple, but so good:

I did this!  There was a  cracking bakers near us years ago that did the best baguettes.  Had some Brie and butter in the fridge and my Twin Peaks loving wife and myself had this when we watched an episode.  Very nice, but was better with a bit of cranberry sauce in it.

Slice of bread, Tuna, mixed with mayo and French mustard (2:1 ratio), cheddar on top. Top slice with cheese on top, panini grill 3 minutes on hot. Perfect.

Cheese beans and marmite spread on one slice is another toastie fave.

Can’t believe you eat crusty baguette nobs Bacon. They get chopped off and covered in butter but never make it to the finished sandwich.

This is probably something I picked up from Joey on Friends or something but I feel like everyone has a sandwich experience that they’ll forever chase. Mine was going to American Football tryouts when I was 10 and my mum making me a banging packed lunch. Corned beef, salad and salad crème. I never played American Football after that but those sandwiches will live on forever.

As always Aldi is king. Their metro subs are great and the pastrami and cheeses are nice and cheap.
