I'm intrigued how this interaction went. Visualising them all having a natter over a cup of tea, broken by you yelling, 'it's just shite porn for grannies you know!', and legging it into the stairwell.

It was brought about by one of them saying they just couldn’t get into GOT but it didn’t matter as Poldark was much better. Then I legged it into the stairwell and ate my lunch alone.

Yeah, Cancer Research in Brum town have gone down that route and have filled a "retro" section with shit jeans from 2 years ago. Just go down to the Rag Market and get something legit old and interesting for half the price.

It's been a few years since I've been the Rag Market, but there used to be a great second hand clothes stall there run by a guy who looks like a bit of an old Rocker and has probably lived a great life.  In the early 2000s when I used to live in Retro stuff, I would pick up original 70s shirts for a £5 from him.  He'd have second hand Fred Perry tops for the same price, Levi jeans, denim jackets, retro coats, and all ridiculously affordably priced.  For a period there was another chap who had a second hand stall opposite him, but he has long gone.

I love a charity shop, particularly for buying records. I don't mind sometimes overpaying slightly compared to what I could get an album on ebay for, especially in the smaller charity's shops, but British Heart Foundation seems to be the worst around here for "Ah fuck it, stick it on at a tenner" for the most random shite. And it's always water damaged and scratched, like they found it down a well. They had some Asia albums on at £20 each the other day. Fucking Asia.

British Heart Foundation prices are a joke.  I was checking out the DVD section just last week and they had second-hand DVD boxsets that were priced at just 50p cheaper than what you can get the box sets for brand new.  I genuinely think they've not got a clue when it comes to stuff like that, records etc.

They dont, but the majority of people that work in there are volunteers, and probably haven't got time to price accordingly.

It does mean that sometimes you'll pick up genuine underpriced bargains though, so swings and roundabouts.

I'm all for charity shops already charging eBay prices on decent stuff to ward off the buy to sell wankers. That Retro Reselling dickhead on YouTube used to get his knickers in a twist that he wasn't able to skim a little off the top from them.

Probably one for the irrational hatred thread.

I quite enjoyed those videos during lockdown (but then I also watched a man hopping on and off freight trains in the States so let's not judge eh?) but it was more seeing him go round boot sales, rather than the bits where he priced it all up.

Love a boot sale.

Me and the Mrs got into it through lockdown too. Might have actually been you mentioning the channel on here that started it. Honestly enjoyed it for the most part but the charity shop moaning put me off in the end. Came across like he believed their sole reason for being open was so that the re-sellers could make money.

He's still there today and has some right oddities for sale, there was a stray Burzum shirt on the rack recently which was odd but I'm not sure he knew what it was.

The charity shop pricing is a difficult one. Obviously they want to make money but at the same time don't want to price themselves out. It's a fine line.

I remember when my mum used to regularly work in one and it was as much about their knowledge of various things than anything. You could get one staff member that knew absolutely everything about jewellery while another knew about books. And then you'd get those who were really just there to make friends and didn't know shit about anything.

So yeah your chances of a bargain can definitely come down to who works there and how vigilant they are in checking what prices things should be.

I know my mum would always ask me when they got graphic novels in - sometimes full collections - if they were worth anything as I doubt any of the staff members were that knowledgeable in Marvel or the Walking Dead.

WH Smith's are always rotten. It's a book shop with a bad selection of books. It's a stationary shop with a bad selection of stationary. It's a newsagents that's twice as expensive as an actual newsagents. Oh yeah, and it's completely grey and the lights are too bright. A terrible, pointless shop.

More of a general one but I hate clothes shopping for the primary reason that they always play just the absolute dirt worst shittiest music in them as a rule. I don't even know how they find such music as I've never heard anyone listen to it outside of a high street clothes shop. If they played good tunes I'd be in a better mood and more likely to buy something.

I kinda hate Waterstones, they never stock any of the kinds of books I want to the point where I'm sure they're trying to dumb down readers. Half the shop is fucking manga now.

I've been in some absolutely beautiful Waterstones. I could spend all day in the Kingston one. Also the staff are usually lovely and incredibly helpful. The smaller ones are a bit pants but the big shops are great.

Oxford has a great one as well. Lovely old building with multiple levels and an area for groups or a signing/reading.

But The Works is the opposite. Just stacks of shit books no one else could flog, art supplies and toys in piles. Finding anything in there you actually wanted to look for is a nightmare.

They also sell really old dvds for more money than they were probably sold for when they first came out. It’s an actual rip off.

I love that Waterstones. Great selection in there. And the cafe was a great addition.

Yeah, the Kingston one is superb. I did a xmas temp job there once when I was younger in the evenings and we would just talk about books, go out and smoke and then end the night in The Druids Head in the market square. Halcyon days.

You seen the one in Bradford?

I feel like Waterstones does get a bad rap, as its obviously the only book chain, but the overwhelming majority of staff are so helpful.

I don't hate Waterstones, but I am very slightly irked by them, for an irrational reason: when I was young, one fond memory was going with my dad to deliver books at the shops on Charing Cross Road (Colletts, Foyles, etc.) in the morning, then going to Gabi's for salt beef sandwiches, and then, for the afternoon, he'd take me to Dillons just round the corner from Russell Square - it was a big, old-style bookshop, and I spent happy hours there looking for the latest Asterix, Tintin, Fighting Fantasy, books on myths and legends from various countries, or anything that might just pique my interest.

Waterstones eventually took it over, and, whilst they didn't ruin it (it's a perfectly fine bookshop), it doesn't have the same, cosy feel that Dillons did.

Who is it on here who does that?

I remember someone bragging about it before but can't remember who it was.
