Paid Members JLM Posted February 1 Paid Members Posted February 1 Primate I enjoyed this! I love a creature feature B Movie, and this is one of those if it had a budget. Crucially though, it’s not a parody and it isn’t winking at the camera to let you know it knows it’s a creature feature B Movie. It has all of the tropes. The people are unfathomably irresponsible and stupid at every turn, the creature is sometimes a rabid animal but at other times inexplicably devious and sneaky, there are a bunch of very unlikeable dead meats lining up for the slaughter. It does all of the things but it isn’t elbowing you in the ribs to see if you get it. I also love an 18 certificate horror! Some very nasty kills with some very impressive effects. Speaking of which, Ben the chimp is the clear highlight of the movie as he should be. Brilliant use of movement artists, puppetry and other practical effects. Could tell immediately that he wasn’t a cartoon and the film is so much better for it. In keeping with the genre it also has an 88 minute run time, which is a blessing when soooo many films these days seem to be about half a hour longer than they need to be. It gets straight to business, does what it came to do and lets you get on with your day. A fine addition to the attractive morons getting murdered by animals genre, and it warms my heart that this sort of movie is still getting a cinema release and making decent money. Quote
SaitoRyo Posted February 2 Posted February 2 Interstate 60 22-year-old kid wants to be an artist, but his father wants him to join the law firm. He makes a wish on his birthday and Gary Oldman, playing some wish-grating character, sends him on a road trip, which is in part to 'find himself' and also find the girl from his dreams who has been inspiring his art. On Interstate 60, a road that seemingly doesn't exist. It's a fun road trip comedy fantasy from the bloke who wrote Back to the Future. It's full of zany characters and situations, which means small roles and cameos for the likes of Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Chris Cooper and Kurt Russell. A decent enough way to kill a couple of hours, but not great or anything. Vision Quest I liked this one! Matthew Modine wants to be the absolute best high school wrestler he can be and is training and dieting and fully focussed on doing it. And then Linda Fiorentina shows up and moves into his house and he wants to do her instead. And really, all you can say is 'fair play'. Good coming-of-age/sports drama/sort-of rom-com, this. Good characters, simple story. A belting soundtrack, too (some young lass called Madonna shows up to sing a song in a nightclub). Quote

A shame because this was a very sweet movie about Japanese culture. Brandon Fraser was great, but everyone in it was enjoyable and just left me smiling. I didn’t see any trailers so I’d recommend doing the same. Avatar Fire and Ash I’d put off seeing as it looked just like the last one. And it was. I’m bored with the serious now. Couldn’t get into it, characters are very indistinguishable and most crucially didn’t care what happened to any of them. Saw it in IMAX 3D and was at I think 60fps as for a lot of it, it just looked and moved like a PlayStation cut scene. And even the 3D didn’t feel great in this compared to earlier entries. I’ve no plans to return to Pandora. Quote

SaitoRyo Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Self Reliance A cross between The Game and The Truman Show, this is about a guy who agrees to sign up to a dark web game show where he has to last a month with people trying to kill him, but they're not allowed to do so if he's within a few feet of another person. It's a Lonely Island production, written by, directed by and starring Jake Johnson. And it does alright in trying to balance the ridiculous and the sincere. It has a few really funny bits in it (some fall flat) and is barely ninety minutes, so I'd say it's worth a punt if you like this sort of comedy thriller. I had a decent time. Nobody's Baby I will not apologise for liking this movie. Skeet Ulrich and a completely unrecognisable Gary Oldman are two career criminals who come into possession of a baby and end up mingling with a bunch of trailer park misfits as they try to figure out just what to do with the kid. A surprisingly good little caper also featuring Mary Steenburgen, Anna Gunn, Peter Greene and Matthew Modine. Oh, and WCW fan favourite Maxx Payne shows up as a truck driver, as if you needed another reason to check this one out. Quote

Raimi just has such a good understanding of the blurred lines between ultra violent horror and comedy. The final act is equally wince-inducing and hilarious, which makes for a fantastic cinema movie. Great score, stunning location, effective flirting with the tropes of this type of movie. Leaning into a teased romance, humanising the monstrous douchebag, having the two characters grow to understand each other after being forced together in extreme circumstances. All of this to set up what you know will happen in the end, but still managing to surprise with exactly when the tonal shifts come and how extreme they are. Was belly laughing at the CPR/vomit scene. More important than all of that though is an utterly joyous performance from Rachael McAdams. Sympathetic, relatable, hilarious and terrifying, often in the same scene. She’s a delight to watch from start to finish. Quote
SaitoRyo Posted February 6 Posted February 6 American Heart Career criminal Jeff Bridges gets out of the slammer and is met by his fourteen-year-old son (Edward Furlong), who is trying to escape an abusive uncle and rekindle a relationship with his one living parent, despite them never really having had a relationship in the first place. Really, really good 'ex-con tries to make good' movie, this, and Bridges is absolutely fantastic in it. It was directed by Martin Bell, who made an excellent documentary about teenagers living on the streets of Seattle (Streetwise) almost a decade prior. This is clearly heavily inspired by that and is quite bleak in tone (don't expect a happy ending), but not unrelentingly so. It's another one of those hidden gems that seemingly slipped through the cracks after not getting a proper theatrical release at the time. Quote

Him and Marissa Tomei have great chemistry and they really nail the courtroom scene. Unlawful Entry It’s Cape Fear but with Ray Liotta as a mental cop that becomes obsessed with the wife. I wasn’t really gripped by it and actually in this current world the story of a bad cop getting away with everything was frustrating to watch. The final third when Liotta really goes off the deep end is fantastic though and overall it ended up being decent. Quote

I'm not in love with the final stretch but it was at least satisfactory. Rachel McAdams vs the boar is an all-timer. I've really missed Sam Raimi. Primate Decent! Easily the best film Johannes Roberts has ever made and while that is the faintest of praise, this is well done. Not over-reliant on jump scares and it does what it does without being about TRAUMA and GRIEF. It's just a monkey gone mad. That's all we asked for. Quote
