DavidB6937
I played the Village demo and while I did enjoy it, I wasn't blown away by it. It was fun but I wasn't very impressed with the visuals.
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted May 12, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted May 12, 2021 I think the problem with the RE Village hype is Lady Dimitrescu. Everybody is too busy getting thirsty for some "tall vampire lady" to care about the rest of the game. I hear she's not in it for long, either.

Presumably to pay for lawyers in order to fight the inevitable cease and desists from Capcom. Also, I had a look, and have spent 13 Days, 17 hours playing TSW2 on my XBox. I don't know how much time I've also spent on 2020, but that's a fortnight out of my last year or so spent on that game. I think around as much time as I put into Animal Crossing last year, Edited May 12, 2021 by jazzygeofferz

The Gaffer
Finished Final Fantasy IX again last night for the first time since I was a kid. Disc 3 nearly made me tap out, again. It gets really, really slow around Oeilvert/Desert Palace. The whole thing is oddly paced, actually. The first disc is the strongest, but once it's done the scenarios balance the massive cast by either A) Having you go hours and hours at a time without getting to play certain characters, making you question if it's bother levelling them up at all or B) Switches between them all really fast, having them come in and out of scenes like a mad stage play. It also gets easier as it goes along, but I don't think that's super unusual with an old school JRPG once you've figured a few things out. Honestly, once you have auto regen/reflect learned from the weapons the game essentially plays itself. Totally worth it, though. I fucking bawled at the ending. One of those proper "Wow, this is better than when I was younger" moments, because I have an adult frame of reference for the themes it's going for. Dagger and Zidane's a far better love story than Cloud/Aeris, Squall/Rinoa, Tidus/Yuna. By a considerable distance. Best soundtrack of the series too. It's the best one, really. Had a splendid time replaying it. Plays much slower than 7 or 8 though, I'll say that much. At least before you whack the speed enhancements on it. Some of the transitions and dialogue pop ups are achingly slow.
King of Hamptons
Loving my PS5 at the moment, controller is the main high point, feels much more solid the the duelshock 4. Apart from the new resident Evil. What games would you recommend?

Agreed, although I found it to be Dagger's story this time around. I continued on with X - which I didn't mind as a young'un - but the series being excellent really did end with IX for me. I'm more open minded than I was back then with things like no world map, the more obvious linearity etc but it'll never resonate with me like the earlier games. In X you suddenly have all the worst voice acting in the world in one place, but not only that, the framing and directing of all those story scenes is horrible. Characters just pause awkwardly, pace around like morons and blurt out their lines at weird alternating volumes. Spira's terminally uncool, even for Final Fantasy. You're basically just stuck on a po faced religious quest with these goofballs who dress funny, pray and do water basketball. There's no part of it you'd really actually want.

When I started playing 7, a few of my friends used to talk about how Aeris made them cry, and it was the first time they ever cried at a video game. It didn't get me, but the Black Mage Village in FF9 absolutely did. Them becoming self-aware, learning about death but not really understanding it, and one of them just staring at the sun just completely broke me. It's one of my favourite bits of any video game, and how Vivi's story ties into it is delightful. 5 minutes ago, Gay as FOOK said: I continued on with X - which I didn't mind as a young'un - but the series being excellent really did end with IX for me. I played a bit of 12, but never finished it. IX felt like it was consciously a send-off to the series as it was - it took a step backwards from the more sci-fi settings of 6 through 8, and back into the kind of Laputa/Nausicaa influenced vibe of the earlier games. It's so full of loving references to the older games, and so much less po-faced than 8 (and, in many respects, 7) that it really felt like they knew they weren't going to make any more quite like it and just put everything into this one game. Nothing after that every really felt like a "proper" Final Fantasy to me.
Paid Members Tommy! Posted May 21, 2021 Paid Members Share Posted May 21, 2021 I'm looking for a good switch lite recommendation from the cool cats. I've played through Boarderlands (which held up well) and then tried Bioshock as it was hyped at the time but I never bothered picking them up. I think they are dreadful and I'm not getting much from them so my fall back was Super Mario World, but I've blitzed every exit so I'm back on the hunt until that Tony Hawk port comes out in a few months.
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted May 21, 2021 Moderators Share Posted May 21, 2021 Currently playing darkest dungeon on switch. Navigation is a bit clunky as its clearly designed for keyboard and mouse, but gameplay is excellent.
