It was only yesterday that I learned that "Chubby Checker" was a play on his name, which seems like something I should have known by now. I didn't know that! That's a brill bit of trivia, thanks for that. 11 minutes ago, Sergio Mendacious said: More people need to know about Lardy Backgammon. Ah, those tuba solos... Paid Members seph Posted November 7, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 7, 2017 Awful news for baseball - former Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay has been killed in a plane crash today, only 40 years old and only gone from the sport 4 years. Shit. He was the cover star of MLB 2K11. I still play that game. Is he still the last person to pitch a perfect game?

No unbelievably there was 3 Perfect Games pitched in 2012 I think it was None since then though which makes that season even more bizarre A real sad day for the sport, one of the best pitchers of his generation and was a genuinely good guy, he paid for kids from a sick Kids Hospital to attend games in his Box when he was with the Blue Jays and his last tweet was just 2 days ago celebrating what I think is his Kids Little League team which he helped with Still is one of only 2 people to have thrown a Post season No Hitter. Awards Moderator Onyx2 Posted November 8, 2017 Awards Moderator Share Posted November 8, 2017 Antonio Carluccio has died and I'm bereft. What a generous man, a fearless advocate, full of energy and life to the end. Was lucky enough to meet him only last year. His autobiography is a cracking read: how he battled depression, suicide attempts, worked at a railway siding, his bitter feud with Gennaro Contaldo, losing the Carluccio chain... A brilliant guy and a proper inspiration to me. Mof mof!
Paid Members Gus Mears Posted November 8, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted November 8, 2017 One of my favourite celebrity chefs and a mile better than Contaldo. Came across as totally authentic on the television. Great picture Onyx.

Keith Houchen
He was wonderful, wasn't he? I remember him on that Beat The Takeaway show or whatever it was called. He was against the clock but just went about his way really relaxed and made cracking food and won.

He just exuded warmth and joviality. I'll be writing an obit on my blog tonight for sure.

Paid Members Thunderplex Posted November 8, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 8, 2017 Loved watching his stuff. He had a cracking grump at Jenny Barnett on the show she’s used to have on the good food channel. She’d done her whole interfering thing throughout his bit till it got to the point where he calmly, but sternly said “do you to do this quickly or properly?”. Shut her right up. Legend. Paid Members mim731 Posted November 9, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 9, 2017 Sad news. I was also lucky enough to meet Antonio Carluccio a few years ago too. We shared a shop bought cheese sandwich in the green room at RTE in 2009, he was very nice, really warm and friendly to a complete stranger. Great chef, and a lovely fella. RIP. Paid Members Gus Mears Posted November 10, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted November 10, 2017 John Hillerman, who played Higgins in Magnum P.I, is off to the great island in the sky. Fucking love me some Magnum and still watch the repeats quite frequently. 84 is a decent innings for a jobbing actor, another one where I thought he passed away a while ago to be honest. Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted November 10, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted November 10, 2017 He was a superb character actor. You just have to look at the credits he racked up in the 70s especially - Chinatown, Paper Moon, Blazing Saddles, The Nickel Ride, The Day of the Locust - to see that. But yeah, he was the real star of Magnum, a real face from my childhood.
