My wife thought he looked scary but didn't realise that he was a real person so I had to explain to her. His atrocity basically ended the hippy movement, which had been super positive, pro-love, anti-capitalism and anti-war. Hippies had been making stuff like the Vietnam War difficult for America, so the CIA pumped Manson with mind bending drugs knowing he would do something to bring this all crashing down. Might sound far fetched, but this is the same organisation that have been outed for MK Ultra and using LSD on civilians (they spiked an entire village in France then watch them die.)
