Paid Members Big Benny HG Posted July 12, 2015 Paid Members Posted July 12, 2015 I thought they brought Pete Rose in because they were looking for celebrities with some amount of 'sleaze' attached to them for that 'Mania, to match their new edgy and controversial tone (Rose had been permanently banned from baseball in a betting scandal about a decade earlier).
UK Kat Von D Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Big Red Machine is a term associated with the Hells Angels, so I'd always assumed it was a name Taker came up for him
Porkchopcash Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Watching an old msg card from 84. I never realised kim chee was originally called Man Friday!
The Clint Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 (edited) At the time I thought it was a little weird to have Rose draw instant heat from the crowd at Mania 14 just to have Kane tombstone him which resulted in him getting a nice little pop. Now considering that Kane was a top heel in WWE at the time I just found it strange. It almost made the Boston crowd like Kane going into the match with Taker. Edited July 12, 2015 by The Clint
Otto Dem Wanz Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 I didn't want to bump the "Wrestlers that look like they stink" thread, but I'm watching Invasion 2001 and with his braids, piercing and cut off t-shirt Raven looks like he absolutely pongs: The show has held up well I think, even though Austin turning heel for the second time in three months is so unnecessary and further dilutes the actual concept of the WWF being "invaded".
King Pitcos Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 (edited) Austin turning heel there was pretty necessary (moreso than it was at WrestleMania). The alternative was to pretend Booker T was on par with all the big WWF names combined, or to have Undertaker or Rock defect to the Alliance. Kane, Angle or Jericho wouldn't have cut it. Or they could have brought in Ric Flair, but a hundred year old man wasn't the way to instill fear in the hearts of the soldiers who won the Monday night war. Edited July 14, 2015 by King Pitcos
Liam O'Rourke Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 (edited) Austin as a heel was just such a bad idea though. Granted there are logistical problems with WCW and the lack of star power, but that just felt like they double-downed on an awful decision when the Invasion gave them a perfect out for the previous three disastrous months. For the record, this housemate didn't stink but his room was like a bomb had gone off in a tip, and then instead of anyone trying to clear it up they'd just dumped more rubbish on it.
Paid Members DCW Posted July 15, 2015 Paid Members Posted July 15, 2015 Raven was on Jericho's show the other week and moaned that Paterson not liking him was the only reason he didn't get a big run during 00/01 WWF run. Wasn't the fact that Austin/Rock etc were still about, or that he looked and talked like a complete tit. Also refused to reveal the secret genius behind his 7 deadly sins angle (he's saving it for his book) that wasn't even good enough for Heat.
Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted July 15, 2015 Paid Members Posted July 15, 2015 (edited) Just watched an episode of Raw from 1998 and there's a sign in the crowd which says "DX - 2 faggots and a tranny." It was a different time. Edited July 15, 2015 by IANdrewDiceClay
The Clint Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 I remember a sign from a Raw in 1999 that said "I've got a bone for Debra's puppies". Used to spot some corkers in the crowd during those days.
Otto Dem Wanz Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Different tack but my favourite sign was from a Smackdown taping in 2001 that said "Today is Tuesday", simple but funny.
