If it's not obvious who the heels, babyfaces and what the characters are within a few minutes of watching then it's bad wrestling. That would suggest that there's no room in wrestling for complex characters or storylines which really isn't the case. Ironic you say that anyway when I consider NXT to be as close to traditional and simple wrestling as anything under the WWE umbrella these days. It's rare that they get into something long term and rewarding like the Gargano/Ciampa feud for example. Everything else is pretty straight forward. They do individual characters very work I feel.

Paid Members Supremo Posted April 7, 2019 Paid Members Posted April 7, 2019 Mad that anyone could be arguing in favour of complex characters or storylines that go beyond clearly defined babyfaces and heels in this thread. Johnny Gargano went from the hottest thing in the world to a fucking mess of a man and his feud with Ciampa went from feud of the year to embarassing E-Fed shit, all thanks to them trying to make it, "complex." In the long-run, there probably is room for more complex characters and storylines. But the last year of NXT has proved the absolute opposite. The very reason I loved Friday's main event was because Johnny stopped all the comic book shit and went back to be being a pure, never-give-up, white-meat babyface.
DavidB6937 Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Definitely ran for too long with too many ups and downs but I did enjoy the last few weeks with the DIY tag stuff. And by the time they embraced at the end of Takeover I'd almost forgiven the missteps taken along the way.
Mr Butternut Squash Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Dream verses Riddle is wonderful, wonderful pro wrestling. I could watch them two interact all day. Both guys have distinct looks and undeniable in ring charisma. Riddle isn't clicking as a face, so I was over the moon with him working heel here. He looks like a complete star to me. Dream is Dream. It's so refreshing to see WWE go all in and accentuate what makes this guy special. This was the real main event. I'm seemingly in the old fart club. Easy show to watch but I couldn't get invested into anything else. The women are usually a Takeover highlight, they actually sell and do stuff that makes sense. Fuck a four way match though. Dunne/Walter was good for what it was. Really thought that Ricochet fucked himself in the opener. It's pretty jarring seeing the HARDER FASTER mentality get so prominent, especially after seeing Ciampa's career screech to a halt.
Members SuperBacon Posted April 7, 2019 Members Posted April 7, 2019 Malcolm vs Scorch. Book it Vince (but make sure we know who’s heel and who’s face) ?

The King of Old School Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Dream was brilliant again the highlight of NXT for me everytime he is on, i hope we get another match between these two with Riddle going full on heel.

There's no reason for that AT ALL. Ricochet can do everything. Shut up. With you on the fat lads though. It's clear they all watch more Bam Bam Bigelow than Vader tapes these days. Busting it out every now and then would be far more effective. That said, the only spot I really hated is one of my least favourites whenever and wherever it pops up - the everyone does a dive spot ending with loads of people having a cuddle waiting to catch someone. 6 hours ago, Devon Malcolm said: I just absolutely hate his whole look and character. In the ring he's alright but what is he? A high flyer? An MMA guy? He's very clearly an MMA influenced submission hippy. I'm with you on a lot of observations in this great post but not here. His look is superb. No-one else looks like him. And unlike the other skinny dudes, he looks powerfully slim built - because he is. There's not a whole lot to the character which a heel turn and some improved mic work will help sort but I don't think there's a lot of confusion here. Opposite Dream, everyone is a colourless character. He's just so fucking tremendous. You're spot on to wank over him. He just gets it. 6 hours ago, Devon Malcolm said: Part of the problem is that you have a three man commentary team and they're all neutral. A heel commentator would at least sell to me who the heel is supposed to be. It also doesn't help that Nigel McGuinness is crap and Percy Watson might as well have not been there. It's not a three man team, Watson doesn't say anything. Agree on the heel commentator. It's needed across all the shows. I've griped about that before. Sadly you get a few Russorific defenders who think Graves as some "shades of grey" bollocks is effective. And McGuiness is a very poor man's Graves. The heel comms should be partisan 95% of the time minimum. Occassionally reasonable to put over that one guy who's taken shit too far. But otherwise black. Very, very black. 6 hours ago, Devon Malcolm said: Almost everyone on the show was doing the same sort of stuff. It doesn't matter how much they weigh, they're all practically the same, male or female. This is the clear flaw in the production line system. It does allow the cream to stand out though. That way when you get a Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Samoa Joe, Ricochet, Dream, etc (Matt Riddle soon I think) then they very obviously rise to the top because they've got something extra. Not everyone can be a megastar. Most of them will just fill a role getting their shit in for years on end until the dawn of time on Raw or Smackdown. That's cheered you right up, eh? 5 hours ago, DavidB6937 said: I find it weird that people moan about not caring about certain wrestlers etc and yet only dip into the product at the Takeover events or once a year. It's Mania week. This is what they're aiming for - new eyes. We almost all picked up wrestling as kids and it's easy because it's obvious who you love and who you hate. In fairness to WWE, that's still very obvious on Raw and Smackdown from a presentation PPV. Fans wooly the issue.

Fans wooly the issue. Is it though? I've always seen Mania and NXT Takeover on the same weekend as 'season finales' as such so should those shows really be aimed at new eyes? I've never thought of it like that outside of all the other companies using the footfall in the area to get new eyes on THEIR product. I guess they could do with more eyes on NXT certainly but even then they still build towards the show as a culmination of storylines overall. It's a very difficult thing to do that and appeal to new fans at the same time.

How many people on here only take an interest this time of year? And that's just a small sample. There are lapsed and new fans aplenty signing up for their freebie Network subsciption of the back of Mania. This is the time to hit a home run. Not that any of that matters anyway. Wrestling should be easy to pick up at any time because you nevver know when someone is watching for the first time. As much as some will just think "Wow" when they see Ricochet and those big lads flying about, most need to think "I like him, him and him" or "I hope him, him and him get their arses kicked".

Can gaurentee the likes of Bryan/Kofi, AJ/Orton, Drew/Reigns, Becky/Charlotte etc will be going on for a good while yet too.
Paid Members Arch Stanton Posted April 7, 2019 Paid Members Posted April 7, 2019 When your shows run every week, every year, forever and ever, there is no such thing as 'season finales'. Like real sports, wrestling as we know it isn't designed for 'catch up' and there's certainly no such thing as watching from the beginning. As such, every show- especially big ones, should be as accessible as possible to any potential new viewers or returning fans.

Exactly. The Wow reaction catches a newbies interest but the connection with the characters is what gets people coming back over and over. It's why live attendance and ratings are down despite the level of athleticism and wrestling being better than ever. There's not enough over characters. Just thin one dimensional guys who do suicide dives, moonsaults and super kicks in every single match.

But you're a lying, victim card-playing twat. Yesssssss, the Gladders special. Always bowing out calling someone a twat, idiot, racist, sexist or some other label. Good on you mate, I would've been disappointed with anything else. Looking forward to seeing you for you're Mania review, where you can remind everyone how much of a cool casual fan you are (again), how little wrestling you like and watch(again), how original and against the grain your comments are (again.) Oh and how those who disagree are twats. Maybe give it a miss this year mate? Put a Hitchcock film on. Rope is my favourite, and it only lasts 80 minutes, so you'll be saving a lot of precious time.
