SaitoRyo Posted January 8 Posted January 8 I picked up the most recent edition of Inside the Ropes magazine the other day as I was flying out of the UK and thought 'Fuck it, why not?'. It had been a long, long time since I'd bought a (new) wrestling magazine. I thought it was alright for the most part, but fucking hell things aren't like they used to be, are they? Power Slam was printed on much nicer paper, was a lot cheaper (even adjusting for inflation) and had a much broader scope, with all the indie and international coverage. I also noticed a lot more basic grammatical and other errors in ITR than I did in PS. Having read a bunch of old PS mags when I was back over Christmas, the difference in quality really stood out. I don't think Inside the Ropes Magazine is a bad product and I realise the magazine industry has changed substantially since PS's heyday, but there was nothing really in it that would compel me to buy another issue next time I'm over. I did enjoy the Foley interview and the tribute to photographer George Tahinos, but reviews of AEW and WWE PPVs months after the fact felt pointless. In saying all that, I hope they have a solid readership and do decent business in what must be a challenging market. Quote

I think the reason they did nothing for me is probably because the shows happened recently and I'm really not arsed about the current AEW or WWE products. Whenever I look at old Power Slams I'll always check out what the opinion of the shows were at the time. Quote

Interestingly in that podcast @Chorleydaveposted above (which is a good listen by the way) Fin notes one of his reasons for stopping Power Slam was he didn't want to reduce the quality of the magazine (including the paper quality and contrubutors) in order to keep it viable, so you have to imagine ITR isn't far off what PS would have ended up like had it continued. Paid Members DCW Posted January 8 Paid Members Posted January 8 I bought Power Slam regularly from 1999 til about 2006-ish I'd say, the only other regular UK perspective mag I got back then was Fighting Spirit I think, and the paper used in comparison to PS was definitely cheaper and glossier. Some of the pictures in PS were great. So fair play to Fin for sticking to his guns on that front. I spent a small fortune on magazines back then. I'd buy Raw or WWF magazine the odd time which were pricey in Ireland alongside a few others like WOW Magazine which didn't last all that long. Really wish I'd held on to them all instead of slinging them when moving places at some stage. Quote

Agreed. I really wanted to buy the Bret Hart interview issue recently, but it wasn't the price that put me off (it is what it is) it was the quality of the paper and also not much meat on the bones, quite a quick read it seemed. It wasn't even "good" crap quality paper like Private Eye paper (it's not great IMO but I get over it) it was really flimsy like crepe paper. A real shame. Quote
simonworden Posted January 9 Posted January 9 For SEA Wrestling Magazine I use a really high quality looming paper as it's the cheapest for limited print runs and works well for the very limited prints but like Fin I wouldn't want to cheapen in now. Not to toilet paper level of ISR. Printing in the UK though is expensive,bi essentially makes no profit on the rare occasion I sell a print on demand copy to the UK. I'd love to be able to sort out distribution and have it sold in stores or at least at shows but it gets super expensive/messy with all the borders and £6 or more for a wrestling mag just feels wrong. The thing with ISR and Wrestletalk.is the same printers does both and they are the same price so it is just the inside the ropes being a bit tight. Quote

Snitsky's back acne Posted January 9 Posted January 9 (edited) Powerslam was awesome pre-internet. Live event results, pictures from independent shows and Japan. Great stuff. It got me fascinated in ECW, the pictures of exploding ring matches from FMW blew my mind. It was a great source of wrestling knowledge. I loved the interviews too. I can't see much point in wrestling magazines now other than as sources of historical data or people who like things in printed form (like me). Edited January 10 by Snitsky's back acne Quote
