Paid Members Dead Mike Posted December 20, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2012 Agree on 'The Wolfman' that was a terrible wasted opportunity. I can't link to youtube from work but from the trailer the new Hitchcock biopic starring Sir Anthony as the titular auteur looks like great fun. Paid Members Au Posted December 20, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2012 I thought he was absolutely fantastic in Proof, which came out the same year as Worlds Fastest Indian (which I agree was pleasant surprise). I think he was probably alright in Bobby, too, which was out around the same time, but that was a very good film over all. Â Having just looked at his IMDB though, I don't think I've seen much that he's been in since then... Fingers crossed RED 2 will be as fun as the first though. Paid Members MichaelScarn Posted December 20, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2012 Fingers crossed RED 2 will be as fun as the first though. Â I have had the first one to watch for ages now, but I think it slipped from 'must see' status to 'leave for a very rainy day' after hearing some bad reviews (maybe on here) when it came out. Â Is the general consensus that its OK, and what is it akin to?
Paid Members Au Posted December 20, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2012 I wouldn't say it's amazing or anything but it is a lot of fun. I'd say it's a bit like Shoot 'Em Up with an older cast. That sort of sense of humour in an over the top action movie, anyway.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted December 20, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2012 Am I the only person who thought Goodfella's was septic? I watched it thrice, as friends and family were disgusted at me for having the moxy to even think it was shit, but I don't get it. Â Yeah, just you I'm afraid. It's nigh on perfect film making with everything from the performances, freeze frames, voice over, soundtrack & structure being exceptional. The third act of Goodfella's alone is better than most films. Â Don't get me wrong, I loved Casino, and I think Scorcese is magnificent at times, but I just don't get Goodfella's. Although you're talking to a bloke who'd have Hudson Hawk in his top 20.
Mr. Seven
The third act of Goodfella's alone is better than most films. Â It's not though, is it?
Moderators PowerButchi Posted December 20, 2012 Moderators Share Posted December 20, 2012 I always preferred Casino to Goodfelas to be honest. I dunno if it's the pastel suits, bright lights of Vegas or Don Rickles but I prefer it by some way.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted December 20, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2012 Don Rickles This. And I'd throw Joe Pesci nonchalantly shoving Sharon Stone's head down to his crotch in the mix too. Â
Paid Members gmoney Posted December 20, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2012 Greasy James Woods as well. Hard for me to pick between them.
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted December 20, 2012 Moderators Share Posted December 20, 2012 (edited) Ha. Casino is fucking awesome really, isn't it? I must watch that again. Â I like Goodfellas also though. The one I never really connected with is Carlito's Way (obviously not De Niro, but still in the same category). It's beena long time though and it may need rewatching, based on what your reccomendations, guys. Â Worth giving another go? Paid Members gmoney Posted December 20, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2012 (edited) Carito's Way's a bit slight compared to the Scorsese ones. Like most Brian De Palma films it's got some absolutely fantastic scenes, but it's not really essential I reckon. Â Though obviously, Benny Blanco from the Bronx is ace. Paid Members Dead Mike Posted December 20, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2012 Casino's also great but it always felt a bit Goodfella's-lite to me. Maybe it was the casting of Joe Pesci as De Niro's psycho sidekick again or Scorsese using a lot of the same techniques he used in Goodfella's (multiple voiceovers, freeze frame, the rolling stones on the soundtrack). That said, the supporting cast in Casino are brilliant & it's probably Sharon Stones best performance. Â Carlito's Way is great too. Sean Penn was brilliant & the chase/shoot out through Grand Central Station was incredibly tense.
Loki
Sean Penn's coke-sniffing afro Jew is one of the great film icons, c.f Mike Strutter for the spin-off.

I didn't think it was bad but I thought it lost loads of momentum during that part. A great film, though, but I prefer Carlito's Way being a De Palma fanboy and all. Never really warmed to Scorsese as much as most.
Keith Houchen
The narration over the freeze frame in Goodfellas was directly taken from the Truffaut film Jules Et Jim. Bloody great film that is. [/ponce]
