The Cum Doctor

Watched Killer Joe last night. A very bizarre film, with some great characters. The Killer Joe character in particular was very creepy and callous, a fantastic effort by Matthew McConaughey. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, it didn't quite fit, but I'm potentially overlooking something.

Also, you can't go wrong with a bit of Gina Gershan muff from the off.

De Niro hasn't done a good movie since he produced Rocky & Bullwinkle. Discuss.

Discuss what? Your mental health?!

City By The Sea was probably his last good one, fine film, that. But that was 10 years ago.

It's a merkin, I'm afraid.

Yeah, it was pretty good. I though Joe was its weakest character, actually, and the bit with the chicken was fucking dumb. Thomas Haden Church was AMAZING, though.

Was he the dad? The epitome of a dumb hick. Some of his lines were hilarious.

Also...

I stand by Showtime, sir.

And Last Vegas sounds like a right hoot, by golly.

"Four best friends in their late-60's decide to escape retirement and throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single."

OH-OH! Something HAS to go wrong!

I'm not saying he's making movies to the standards of Godfather 2, Casino, Deer Hunter, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Once Upon a Time in America, Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear etc. But I've enjoyed the majority of the films he's brought out in the past few years.

Some have been shit films especially that 'What Just Happened' but I enjoy watching him acting. Limitless was good, Machete was shit but I thought he was decent during the very small role he had, Stone wasn't too bad and Meet The Parents was enjoyable aswell (shocking that they were the most successful films he's been in).

It's difficult. De Niro is one of the best at what he does. He by no means is featured in Cinematic Masterpieces but he still does a good job.

Am I the only person who thought Goodfella's was septic? I watched it thrice, as friends and family were disgusted at me for having the moxy to even think it was shit, but I don't get it.

Yeah, just you I'm afraid. It's nigh on perfect film making with everything from the performances, freeze frames, voice over, soundtrack & structure being exceptional. The third act of Goodfella's alone is better than most films.

It does feel like De Niro got tired of the "Greatest Living Actor" tag and just decided to sign up to any old shit though. Some actors get better and more selective as they reach their elder years. He has done the opposite.

Whilst we're on the subject... there's no sadder sight for me nowadays than seeing 'Starring Anthony Hopkins' on a film trailer.

There was a time when he was hands down my favourite film actor. In the 90s, you were guaranteed a granite-hard performance from him even in films which were otherwise a bit flabby. He could do great drama, horror, and was always the highlight of the blockbusters he deigned with his presence, like Zorro or Mission Impossible whatever.

Something's happened though. The last film in which I thought he was genuinely excellent was the overlooked World's Fastest Indian, but even before then he'd started chewing the scenery.

Now in the last few months I've watched The Wolfman (2010) and Fracture (2007) and he was.... fucking awful in both. He wasn't just phoning it in, lazy sort of terrible. In both of these films, his accent wavers between upperclass English, generic American, and then bizarrely Irish. I mean, to the extent that you're going "Oh, hang on, he's meant to be Irish then...?" His eyes are hooded, he's got paunchy and seems to have limited himself to drawling and barking as the extent of his emotional content.

It's a sad fall from grace. Compare that with Christopher Lee or someone, who aged like a fine wine and can still sparkle a little under all that CGI in The Hobbit.
