Realising we're getting old.

I have an arthritic toe, from a few breaks when I was younger. I mentioned it on a work call today and someone on my team said I had 'chopped unc energy'.

I suspect i'll call HR, once i've had chance to look up what it means.

I am now at the stage where I'm researching daily skin care routines and anti-wrinkle creams and the like. I've never been too fussed about aging (I have a cracking mop of silver hair that I've taken great pride in, and I've tucked away my recent bad back and bad hip under "my "Yoga fixes everything!" gameplan) but the facial changes have actually bothered me a bit and were the first time in a long time where I've though "Fuck, I AM getting old".

The biggest realization of my old age will, and always will be, my refusal to use and adapt to A.I. I'm definitely going to be left in the dirt with my stubborn (re: righteous) refusal to get behind this clear monstrosity, and it makes me recall being in my teens and twenties and even early thirties and wondering why all the older folk are struggling to adapt to this wonderful digital age, and now I completely get it. I am now on par with those old people who didn't want to be forced onto freeview from terrestrial, and they ended up being right as well.

Retinal is your friend.Also, SPF and hydration is paramount.

I've got some grey hair springing up, mainly around my ears. Women get the 'you look old' rather than 'silver fox' treatment so I'm not sure what to do about it. I've been leaving it be but I'm starting to think about dying it, I just can't be arsed with the upkeep.

I went to a new hairdresser a couple of weeks ago who (nicely) poked fun at the grey hair around my ears. We continue to chat and I said something (can't remember what) which surprised her and prompted her to ask how old I am so I told her 43. She was really shocked and said she would have put me at 33. We keep chatting for the next 10 mins or so and she keeps exclaiming how shocked she is and asks me questions like what's your skin care? I bet you don't drink or sunbathe etc. I explained to her that brown skin ages slower due to high levels of melanin so it's mainly genetic. Then a little later, because she must not have believed me, she asked me if I'd ever had any work done on my face 😆

The opposite of what this thread is about but it really did cheer me up.

Perhaps it's a London thing, but I've seen a lot more women with grey/silver/salt-and-pepper hair growing it long over the past couple of years; personally, I think it looks really good, and I'm glad to see the stigma being fought.

Yeah, I really love grey hair. I like that mine has essentially taken over the sides, I look like Paulie Walnuts, but obviously much, much shitter.

No it's definitely nationwide, I've seen a lot of women charting the journey on Instagram. Some chicken out somewhere along the line and head for the bottle of dye. I've been intentional in letting it happen, but sometimes I look in the mirror and feel so old. Then I remember that if I wanted to colour it, it's £100+ at the hairdresser's and it would need to be redone every 2 months and I get comfortable with the grey again.

I tried dying it pink at home once, it faded in a week, I can't be going through all that rigmarole on a weekly basis. I'm too lazy.

I'm only 38, but a good 60% of my hair has gone grey. I was very lucky when it started at 30 and I just had this big grey streak in my fringe, actually looked better with the long hair.

Lots of younger people in France with this grey hair, well the area I'm in.

My Mauritian aunts still treat their greys at home with that noxious, black tar-like chemical stuff. I thought it was mehendi of some sort, but apparently not.

This is definitely a real double standard, but that said from the women I've known to leave the greys in from a younger age it always looks better on those that have shortish hair (like a bob, not proper short). With longer hair it can look a bit straggly when there's not a lot of them - which I've seen on men with long hair too when they've only got a few greys, but enough for it to be noticeable. 

I am completely white haired these days and have been for a while now. I have really nice hair though and that's just an objective fact and not (just) me being boastful. I literally get stopped in the street for compliments on my hair. It's going to make it all the more crushing a blow when I eventually start losing it.

Mehndi stinks. It's usually a khaki colour but will dye your hair ginger/red. Black mehndi is not naturally occuring and is some lab made mix that often causes chemical burns so hopefully it isn't that!

Yeah, I agree, I've recently cut my hair to shoulder length and the grey looks better - even though it's the same. When my hair is down it still looks black/brown but when it's tied up you can see quite a lot of grey so it's creeping slowly.

I always felt my hair was my favourite thing about me, I've always had very thick, long hair and with age it's less full and getting grey. I think that along with back ache is what's been the most glaring part of being aware that I'm ageing.... And listening to Chali XCX and exclaiming that it's just noise.
