CavemanLynn Posted April 24 Posted April 24 Despite making a snide comment about it earlier, I can totally see why every few years, it seems a new scheme or launch like this comes up. Wrestling is so ingrained in US viewing culture that a new promotion with a TV deal can go live in a rolling format, but in the UK, wrestling hasn't been appointment viewing in nearly 40 years; in fact appointment viewing barely seems to exist anymore. It makes sense that investors would try to find a format for wrestling with a "mechanical" reason to keep watching, like a tournament or league, especially something with a clear endpoint like a final or championship match. Explicitly trying to apply football-style rules kind of makes spider-diagram sense - football IS ingrained in UK culture, has a recognisable visual identity and simple rules - but the execution always ends up reading clunky. The whole concept relies on talent being so good that they can cover the stop-start nature of multi-fall matches, with the charisma, conditioning and sincerity to make the most of those pauses to maintain audience interest both in the room AND on camera. That's a hell of an ask for a scene with little on-screen experience beyond the online presence of the indies. Quote

The price will go up to a standard price after the early bird tickets have sold. I'm guessing they just want a minimum number for the first few shows. Quote

The Dart Posted April 24 Posted April 24 I went to a show in Florida once that had a concept, not exactly like this, but there were some similar elemants. It was their first show and I dare say their last one. Tickets were something like £40, so there was no way I was going to go to a show where tickets were that pricey with no names on it with any value. But there was a show by a different promotion in the same venue earlier in the day I did go to and at that show, they just said to the 200 or so crowd - you can all come back to the show later for free, Even doing that, only about 30 people showed up, including me. The show wasn't awful, but the trouble with it is, people for the most part, just want to see a wrestling show. Good guys vs bad guys. They don't care about leagues and a bunch of rules that are different to every other promotion. That's not what people want, even if it is interesting. I spoke to one wrestler who isn't a huge name on the UK scene, but he's doing OK and he was planning to start a promotion (he never did) where every match would be scored by a team of judges to determine the winner. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Fans do not want that crap. Not to say this won't do well, but I doubt it. Quote

Don’t need budget “titantrons” or belts or storylines or convoluted rules in Scunthorpe leisure centre. Glenryck Pilchards Posted July 31 Posted July 31 I went to the free 'pre-season friendly' with my son at Middlesbrough a few weeks ago and it was basically an All-Star show on steroids. They were shifting out the merch like no tomorrow! Whistles, air horns, yellow & red cards, glow sticks and even more tat than I care to mention. We were only there for the first two matches, as my son was overwhelmed by the noise and was knackered after a cubs camping trip. The wrestling style was very much Butlins holiday camp, but all the matches were mini ironman matches, which will be tiresome after a couple of editions. however I have to give them credit for their production, it is probably the best setup I have seen in this country, which was not one of the big US companies. The lighting was good, the sound was decent and the football pitch canvas was unique. At the end of the day it was not my cup of tea, but I can see kids loving the format. Quote
