Yer Mam & Dads favourite grapplers

My mum and dad have never shown anything but total disdain, disapproval and even disgust for the wrestling. I don't reckon they could name more than five wrestlers ever between the pair of them.

It has always amused me no end though, that they both showed particular disdain, disapproval and, in mum's case, disgust towards one CM Punk the last time I did put wrestling on the telly round at their house (2011). My dad suggested that "he's a bit too skinny to be in it, isn't he?", while my mum declared that she wouldn't let him sit on her sofa with greasy hair like that!

My Dad's the same, my Mum has no interest in it either but at least doesn't scoff at the fact it's one of my interests. I did catch a bit of an episode of SmackDown round my grandad's house shortly after my Nan died and even he couldn't deny just how entertaining Eddie Guerrero was.

I don't think my Dad's watched more than 5 minutes without telling me how gay wrestling is. My mum is just baffled by the whole thing.

My old man would often be sat there on Saturday afternoons when I watched WCW Worldwide on ITV. The only times he showed any interest was for the wrestlers who seemed or looked like proper hard cases. He’d pay attention when Vader, the Steiners or Arn Anderson were on. And he’d always comment that Cactus Jack looked like he stinks. “Looks like he could do with a good wash that one” was a line I’d regularly hear from over the top of his newspaper. I actually remember him getting quite invested in a match between newly debuted babyface Steve Regal (before he was Lord Steven) vs Barry Windham one week, I guess just because Regal was repping the UK.

Oddly, with the WWF he was more into big characters. Didn’t seem fussed about the big bruisers like he was with WCW but he loved Macho Man, Piper and clearly got a kick out of Ted Adidase despite him being a bastard.

My mum only took an interest if someone she fancied was on. Rude, Bret and Razor were her favourites. Three of my all time favourites as well, although I fancy them slightly less than she did.

My mum was always a wrestling fan so she's had a number of favourites. Her top 5 would probably be Les Kellet, Alex Shane, Christopher Daniels, The Rock and Roman Reigns. Which I think is a top 5 you probably wouldn't find anywhere else.

My dad wasn't interested in wrestling, mainly because they didn't show wrestling in the pub.

Goldberg seems to be a favorite among parents. My mam saw him enter the ring from backstage. Stopped what she was doing to say "now THAT'S a pro wrestler." And then walked off to do the dishes. Big Bill was over in the Scarlett Chad household.

My mum was never into wrestling, and my dad didn't like American wrestling much except for Bret Hart, because he was a technician like the WoS guys he was a fan of, like Tibor Szakacs and Johnny Saint - he also liked "Ironfist" Clive Myers, Jackie Pallo, "Rollerball" Rocco, and, of course, Kendo Nagasaki. Hated Big Daddy with a passion though.

My Mam has never enjoyed wrestling, although my sister twenty years ago got her to agree that Randy Orton was Tidy and "If he told you to do the pots you'd do them". 

The Old Man would watch it to placate me as a child, but when ECW started on Bravo they shown one evening Johnny Smith vs Taz. The Old Man loved it. "This is fucking proper Gareth!". Then straight after it was The Public Enemy vs The Gangstas or something similar, then it was asked to be turned off. But in the late 00's I always caught him watching TNA on Challenge as he liked Team Canada as he spent a lot of time in Medicine Hat, Alberta when he was in the Army in the 70s. Also he used to like Tony St Clair as I found out from nowhere in 1994 for my 9th brthday and there was a show in Plas Madoc Leisure Centre.

But my Nain Doris was the real wrestling fan. Died in 1997, but it was still real to her. She'd let me watch my wrestling tapes, with very liittle interest from her, on her Black and White portable (She'd never pay for colour and I'd have to bring my VHS with me and plug in in), but although would discuss Mick McManus and Jackie Pallo as  "They'd do the dirty stuff".

Anytime my mom walked in and there was a womens match on she'd be well into it. Wasn't arsed about any of the blokes at all.

My dad can't stand it and used to have his eyes glued to the newspaper whenever I watched wrestling around him, but he did get well into the HHH vs Kevin Nash HIAC match at Bad Blood that one year.

They had a brilliant knack of walking in during the worst moments, of course. Even a few years back when I was stopping with them during lockdown and only watching AEW, they didn't walk in during any of the hardcore brawls or spotfests or technical affairs. Nah, my dad chooses to walk in when Matt Hardy is doing his teleporting bullshit. Embarrassing.

I had a similar family disdain to wrestling. When we were living with my aunt & uncle me and my cousin were forced to watch it in the bedroom so as not to disturb the adults. When Brock Lesnar debuted that kayfabe was destroyed as my uncle Jim shouted across from the living room asking me who the hell this monster was. Turned out they were just watching it without their annoying kids yelling through it.

My gran was another who didn't care for it when I put TWC on in the house, until Alex Shane was on the TV. She would quietly stand behind the sofa, not sitting down so you knew she wasn't staying to watch, but absolutely enthralled with him.
