Don’t know what I expected from her here, never really been familiar with her. But just from watching this she seems surprisingly grounded and normal for a Hogan. Says a lot that she actually had herself removed as a beneficiary of Hulk’s will. Seen a lot of negative shit about/towards her from the sewer dwellers on social media but I think she comes across well here. And she obviously wasn’t after his money, which is more than you can say for almost everyone else who hung around him. “We all know money does not buy happiness. We had a ton of it and our family was a disaster”.

I promised everyone that I’d go back and read the relevant section of Hogans book to see how his account of the 93 run and stealing another payday differs from Brets according to both books, so I have.

MANIA IX

Bret says that on the way to Mania IX Vince had let him think he was beating Yokozuna, off the back of telling him he’d be holding the belt for at least a year, which made Bret think Vince was serious about him as the new face of the company. When he got to Paradise NV on the 2nd, the day before the show, he says Vince asked him to drop the title (flooring him) and spelled out the Hogan bullshit, without going into detail as to why, or whose idea it was, but insisted plans for Bret hadn’t changed, that it was still “onwards and upwards for (him).”

Hogan says, on the very afternoon of the show on 3rd April, he put it to Vince that he win the title. That Bret was already scheduled to lose the title to Yoko, the “seven hundred pound challenger” (sic) and he persuaded Vince that they could use the dying embers of Hulkamania to kickstart Yoko’s push in the biggest way possible and “pass the torch” to him… by having The Hulkster first beat him for the belt and lose it back to him at the next PPV. Sounds reasonable, right?

INTERIM

Bret says he was told he’d win King of the Ring, then he and Hogan went to a secret photo shoot on 29th May for SummerSlam promo shots including one “tug of war” where both had hands on the belt. I have a hazy memory of actually seeing this photo but I think I’ve conflated a “Fantasy Warfare” WWF Magazine piece of Hogan vs Bret with a similar shot to how that one sounds, for Bret vs Diesel for the December 95 cover. Either way, Bret was told by Vince he was wrestling Hogan for the title at SummerSlam and winning it back with the Sharpshooter. Next, a few days along and a few days out from the PPV, Vince calls Bret to say Hogan doesn’t want to lose the title to him, that he’s too small and not in his league. He’ll have another go at persuading him, but if Hogan won’t agree to the match, Bret will work Lawler at SummerSlam instead. Obviously those efforts (Vince’s version as told to Bret) failed because Bret goes into Fairborn OH knowing the SummerSlam match with Hulk is off.

Hogan… either didn’t recall any conversations about deviations from his planned future from his conversation with Vince on Mania afternoon or indeed anything that happened to him between the two PPVs, or simply considered them insignificant enough details to omit them from his novella.

KING OF THE RING

Hogans version condenses all the face to face conversations between him, Bret and Vince into the afternoon of the PPV “next month” (sic) after Mania. He says Bret storms into his locker room and calls him a piece of shit for refusing to put him over saying - this is interesting - that he isnt in his league. Hulkster insists Bret was never part of his deal, which was simply putting Yoko over in the end. Our Terry believes that there and then he escorted Hart to Vince’s locker room and asked Bret to repeat it in front of Vince, to which McMahon tells him “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Bret looks dumbfounded, and Hogan feels like he’s being used as Vince’s pawn in a game he’s played with Bret. Hmm. Hulk wraps his memory up with losing to Zuna and leaving the Fed, without any word about other matches before doing so including the Euro tour of rematches.

Brets version has him telling Hogan “Go fuck yourself” about not being in his league and no further conversation on the night itself. Next night at TVs, Terry quietly asks Bret for a word. He admits backing out of wrestling Bret at SummerSlam but not for the reasons Bret has been told ; that he WAS going to lose to him for the belt, but when Vince told him he was changing it to (Brets words) “a non-title match” then Hulk told him he didn’t want to do the match under those circumstances. Bret says it’s completely different to what Vince told him so it’s here Hulk marches Hitman to McMahons office, and Bret tells Hogan to tell Jr what he just told him. Hogan repeats the story and Vince looks him in the eye and says “I never said it would be a title match.” This of course, coming about two weeks after the two men posed fighting over the belt. Bret says Hulk looked like he had tears in his eyes when Vince’s door shut behind them. Leaving Bret feeling like he’s been the pawn in a game that Vince was playing with Hogan.

MY THOUGHTS 

There’s a lot to unpack here but it’s telling that even Hogans swiss cheese memory still recalls the verbiage Bret received from Vince (purporting it to come from Hulk) about him “not being in his league.” So, regardless of whether Hogan said that to McMahon or not, we can safely assume Vince definitely said it to Hart. One thing that’s not touched upon by either (and Bret may not even have known) is the justification given by Bruce Prichard on STW for Hogan getting the title to begin with ; the late July/early August Europe tour which they’d persuaded Hulk to do and wanted to promote him as champion for. Of note, there were also a couple of mid-July domestic house shows initially advertised as Hogan vs Yoko for the title which then got changed to Yoko vs Bret and indeed, Hulk didn’t appear at all. All this seems to suggest that indeed Hogan was initially meant to be champ through July and even up to SummerSlam, as described to Bret by Vince. Of further note, there’s an interesting inference in Vince’s early June phone call to Bret (assuming we find Bret credible) - he told Hitman he’s wrestling Lawler at SummerSlam if Jr can’t change Hogans mind about the match… even though Bret is several months deep into a program with “The Narcissist” that started in a high profile manner over Mania weekend, crossing over with Perfect vs Shawn which of course, had a PPV conclusion at SummerSlam. It feels to me that if Brets getting pitched a Hogan alternative plan prior to King of the Ring and it isn’t Luger… then McMahon has already got different plans for Lex for SummerSlam. I think Bret’s been collateral damage, Vince decided that instead of putting as much effort possible into using Hogans last hurrah to ultimately put Bret on the map, he’s going instead to put the miles in on the Lex Express and build himself a whole NEW flag waving patriot hero - head spun by Flexy Lexy’s physique no doubt - regardless of whether Hogan fancies losing to Bret or not once the belts off him. And let’s be fair, losing two PPV in a row on his way out the door, one by clean submission, which he doesn’t really need to do once he’s coughed up the championship as obligated? “Doesn’t work for me, brother.” That both parties felt like Vince was playing games with the other probably says it all. It’s pretty interesting to me that if Vince hadn’t decided the title wasn’t going to be a part in Hogan vs Hart at SummerSlam, Yoko would have lost two straight to Hogan on PPV (plus all the losses on the house shows) and you’d think was already a spent force as a main event threat, so they’d have needed to start again with a main event heel. And what of Lex? With a string of tainted wins over Bret on the road, they’d done several post match rucks where it looked like they’d use Lex as the foil to turn Razor babyface ; might that have been “The Narcissist’s” duty at SummerSlam? Or maybe with Hogan on the way out they’d have gone ahead with the bodyslam/Intrepid stuff anyway and Hogan vs Bret would have gone on as the title match after Luger vs Yokozuna, not instead of?

Hogans full of shit that winning the title was purely his idea with an end game of losing to Yokozuna, and never being told he was working Bret, you’d think. Anyone interested in more of his lies, I’m probably selling his book soon.
