The whole “my Mount Rushmore” thing really tickles me. The idea of someone literally building their own Mount Rushmore in their garden with a badly sculpted Hulk Hogan and three other WWF wrestlers is just brilliant. There must be thousands of them by now, all across the globe, each utterly baffling their neighbours.

“Jean, he’s added a fourth one now. I still think the first one’s supposed to be that Hulk Hogan fella I just saw on the news, but no idea of the other three. Is the last one Noel Edmonds?”

This whole thing has made me sick, if I'm going to be completely honest. This isn't a man who should be lauded. Seeing him everywhere for a couple of days, seeing people with no interest in wrestling (now) posting tributes to this childhood hero, seeing the effect the PR rehab job has done one him, it's all horrible.

I know what Hulk Hogan is to pro-wrestling. I know what that era means to most of us. I also know that he pissed away the right to be remembered remotely fondly the day he was outed as a racist. He was always a fraud and had questionable morals but he's a carny in a carny industry so I can live with and laugh at some of that. The racism was unacceptable and he should never have been a public figure after that. You see right-wing numpties screaming about cancel culture but this is #1 example that it doesn't exist. This fella should have been cancelled from public conscience. It's little wonder that the world has felt a less tolerant, less safe and less pleasant place to exist in the last decade.

There's some chatter in the Raw thread which I agree with, this stuff does give me the creeps knowing that people will be eulogising Vince McMahon one day.

As others have noted, the Mt Rushmore thing has been interpreted as people's favourites, which wasn't was I was intending. I think the faces on the actual mountain represent the US's foundation, development, expansion and presevation.

Out of interest, who would be on your top 4, by whatever criteria you are interpreting Mt Rushmore to be?

I think that's absolutely fair enough, and you're not wrong. One thing I'd say though, wrestling is a weird bubble and despite him being a racist scumbag (among plenty of other stuff) I don't know how well that information travelled, somehow, into mainstream consciousness.

I have spoken to several people in passing this week, who brough up Hogan dying having watched it as a kid, but have had zero interest since the early 90s. The one constant seemed to be that they had no idea about the racism scandal. All they knew was the big WWF star who was in films. Not saying ignorance is an excuse, but the mainstream penetration of the racism thing vs the cultural recognition of Hogan certainly don't appear to be equal, sadly.

I think the misunderstanding comes from how the term "Mount Rushmore" is used these days - it’s often taken to mean your personal Mount Rushmore; basically just your favourites.

If we’re going by the traditional definition, it becomes much less subjective. Gate receipts, crowd sizes, and merch sales would determine who belongs on it, leaving very little room for debate since it’s all backed by data. By that logic, of course Hogan has to be on there. But it also means no one really gets a say - it's just a numbers game.

On the other hand, if we’re using the more common, informal definition (your top 4 favourites), then my Mt Rushmore would be Savage, Dynamite, Austin, and Bret.

Just as an aside, does it feel like the term and concept of a "Mount Rushmore" has suddenly been way more prevalent than usual in the last few months? Not necessarily isolated to wrestling, but just in general it feels like something that has been discussed to death in 2025 in more general terms, which seems odd.

I've never personally used it. I just say "top 5".

Likewise, it feels like a very specifically American concept, for obvious reasons, but it just seems to suddenly be part of the parlance everywhere which is unusual.
