He is singled out for criticism most games by most of our supporters and I understand why, but I actually thought yesterday being a sort of false 9/meat shield was his best outing in some time for the reasons Rick has outlined. As frustrating as he is playing on the left, very rarely taking on the full back, getting stopped every time he predictably tries to cut inside, he gets picked because of his work rate, fitness and physical presence. Robertson can’t do it every week any more, Salah doesn’t do it, Wirtz presses intermittently, Frimpong doesn’t win the ball, we have a rotating gallery of right backs because the position is cursed. We’ve also lost the rabid intensity of Diaz and Nunez. A major criticism this season is how low intensity and easy to play through Liverpool have been. As maddening as Gakpo can be to watch, without him that problem would be even worse. Quote
Mr_Danger Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Gakpo is an absolutely fine player. Works hard, has decent numbers, doesn’t rock the boat. What he isn’t is a star forward. He’s not the guy you want to stake your hopes of a game on. He’s the guy you bring on to see a game out, plays every third or fourth game and is generally considered your fourth best attacker. What Liverpool had last year for two thirds of the season was a team of really talented players who worked harder than most of the other teams. What they have this year is a team of really talented players who never work harder that the other team. Quote

Other young midfielders in the league get all the plaudits, and rightly so, but my word, he's superb and if he wasn't in such a shit team he'd be lauded too. Future Spurs captain right there, I really hope he stays with us. Also he'd be a superb option for England at the World Cup, with being so versatile, but he won't get a look in which is mental when you know Tuchel will take Jordan Henderson, who admittedly has had a good season. The hyper-analysis on mitigating factors has been done to death, but at this stage in the season I really do wonder if the players just had a word and pushed for a more intense press because that was so fun to watch and the kind of game that gave us our Neutrals's Favourites™ stick up the arse. I fully expect them to go back to agonising, pragmatic tiki-slacka for the remaining league games but if we can keep this mad version of the team for the remainder of the CL campaign that'd be lovely. I watched it, it was great fun. Much more like last season. Even Salah played well and he hasn't any time I've seen him this season. Quote

lanky316 Posted March 20 Posted March 20 One of the things that impresses me the most about him, the last couple of seasons he's largely been being played out of position and for the most part has still looked very good in a couple of... difficult seasons at the club. I think he's got the potential to be a great player to build the team around, possibly even a national side too if he progresses well from where he is now. Quote
